Ole Miss Punches ticket to the Lincoln Regional Final with 6-3 win over Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. — It took two days, but Ole Miss defeated Nebraska 6-3 Sunday afternoon to advance to the championship game of the Lincoln Regional. Today’s game was the continuation of Saturday night’s contest after a rain delay following the eighth inning.

A pitcher’s duel broke out between Ole Miss (38-21, 15-15 SEC) and Nebraska in the winners’ bracket game of the Lincoln Regional.

Ole Miss’ starter on Saturday, Taylor Rabe, came out on fire on the mound, which made it hard for the Nebraska sluggers to get on base. Rabe only allowed a walk and a hit in the first two innings.

Nebraska’s (43-16, 23-7 Big 10) starter Ty Horn matched Rabe on the hill, giving up only three hits in the first two innings.

Rabe continued dealing on the bump against the Cornhuskers’ batters into the fourth until Nebraska got on the scoreboard first on a solo home run by Jett Buck to take a 1-0 lead after four complete.

Horn allowed the Rebels five base runners through the fifth inning with three hits from Will Furniss, Dom Decker and Hayden Federico. Tristan Bissetta got on base on a hit-by-pitch and Daniel Pacella drew a walk to get on base, but Ole Miss couldn’t scratch out a run through five.

However, the Rebels answered in the sixth inning as Furniss got on base on a one-out single, followed by a two-out base knock by Federico, then Owen Paino delivered a double to center that scored them both.

Later in the frame, Brayden Randle delivered a single that scored Paino as the Rebels took a 3-1 advantage going into the bottom of the sixth.

Taylor Rabe was masterful as he got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth and the Rebels led, 6-3.

For Nebraska, Horn worked 5.2 innings, surrendered three runs on six hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. The Cornhuskers made the call to the bullpen for Tucker Timmerman. Timmerman worked 0.1 innings with no runs on no hits with two walks.

Nebraska brought Caleb Clark and Pryce Bender into pitch in the seventh. Clark tossed 0.2 innings with no runs on no hits with two walks. Bender tossed 1.1 innings surrendered a run on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Ole Miss loaded the bases on five walks in the seventh and scored two runs as Decker and Utermark scored to make it 5-1.

Rabe was outstanding, working 6.0 complete innings and allowed just one run on four hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. Coach Mike Bianco made the call to the bullpen for JP Robertson to start the seventh. Robertson worked 2.0 innings until the delay allowed two runs on two hits with no walks with four strikeouts.

Ole Miss tacked on a run in the eighth as Decker led the frame off with a single, then two batters later, Furniss delivered a base knock to left, and Decker came in on a throwing error to third base.

Nebraska climbed back into the game on a two-run home run by Max Buttenback in the eighth inning that made it 6-3, Ole Miss. After the conclusion of the 8th, the game was suspended due to weather.

The Rebels and Huskers resumed the game in the ninth at noon Sunday. Jalen Worthley took the mound for Nebraska, and he finished the game throwing one inning after holding Ole Miss scoreless in the ninth.

Bianco sent Landon Waters to the mound to start the ninth but then turned to Hudson Calhoun after the first two runners got on base via singles, making things interesting.

Calhoun got a double play, third-to-first, from Judd Utermark that left Nebraska with a runner on second and two outs. Calhoun then hit a batter, but then the Rebels ended the game on a fielder’s choice.

The Ole Miss pitchers retired 13 Nebraska hitters by strikeouts.
