Another Piece for the Future: Ole Miss Baseball Lands Georgia Tech Right-Hander Charlie Willcox

OXFORD, Miss. — The Ole Miss Rebels’ season came to a close on Sunday after suffering a 12-8 loss to the Troy Trojans in the College World Series. There has been no time to sit around, however, as the Rebels quickly moved to the transfer portal, picking up multiple arms, including Charlie Willcox, a right-handed pitcher transferring in from Georgia Tech.

Willcox stands 6-foot-3, weighing in at just under 220 pounds, and will provide some serious heat with a fastball that can reach into the mid-to-upper 90s, alongside a changeup and curveball that will keep hitters guessing. Rebels pitching coach Joel Mangrum has some serious talent with which to work.

In his one season with the Yellow Jackets, Willcox appeared in 11 games, starting one, racking up 14 innings pitched. In those 11 games, he allowed 17 runs, 15 earned, for an ERA of 9.64, also giving up 21 hits and issuing 13 free passes, while totaling 13 strikeouts. Overall, Willcox had a .323 batting average against, with an OPS against of .882.

The Santa Rosa (Florida) native, as a recruit, was a perfect 10-rated prospect, per Perfect Game.

With Mavrick Rizy and Brent Stukes already committed as transfers to the 2027 roster, head coach Mike Bianco and Mangrum have been proactive in rebuilding a staff that could look dramatically different next spring. Ole Miss is expected to lose much of its frontline pitching talent, as Hudson Calhoun, Taylor Rabe, Cade Townsend, Landon Koenig, and Wil Libbert have all received invitations to the MLB Draft Combine and are widely projected to begin their professional careers following the draft.

That reality makes additions like Willcox particularly valuable. The former Georgia Tech arm arrives in Oxford with multiple years of eligibility remaining and the type of upside the Rebels covet on the mound. His collegiate experience has come primarily out of the bullpen, where he made all but one of his appearances for the Yellow Jackets. Because of that, his most immediate fit may be as a high-leverage relief option, though Ole Miss will undoubtedly evaluate whether his repertoire could translate into a larger role as the staff takes shape.

Something to look for, Coach Mangrum has been known to help add pitches to pitchers’ repertoires, most notably, a cutter. If Willcox can work in a cutter to his arsenal, it could complement his hard fastball and changeup to keep velocity and create opposite spin to the changeup as well.

While the sting of Omaha may still linger, Ole Miss has already turned its attention toward what’s next. With Charlie Willcox now in the fold alongside a growing list of portal additions, Bianco and Mangrum continue laying the foundation for the future. If the Rebels can unlock the talent that once made Willcox one of the nation’s top prep prospects, this latest addition could prove to be more than just depth—it could become one of the more important pitching pickups of the offseason.
