Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco changes weekend, midweek pitching rotation

Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco changes weekend, midweek pitching rotation

OXFORD, Miss. — The Rebels’ pitching rotation will look a bit different this week. Monday, on his appearance on SuperTalk Mississippi, Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco named a new starting weekend rotation following the Rebels’ series loss to No. 8 Tennessee in Knoxville this past weekend.

RHP Riley Maddox will take the mound on Friday, while LHP Liam Doyle will continue on Saturdays and LHP Gunnar Dennis will start on Sunday.

Sophomore RHP Kyler Carmack will start the midweek game Tuesday against Austin Peay.

“Transfer from Arkansas State and a kid that has a good fastball,” Bianco said Monday of Carmack.

It’s going to be mid-low 90s fastball, but he also has an excellent change up and good slider. He got beaten up a little bit in his first outing. Like Liam (Doyle), (Carmack) didn’t have the greatest fall, didn’t have the greatest early spring. But (he’s) super talented and that’s why he’s here…Certainly moving Maddox to the weekend, I think this is just a huge opportunity for him, and one I know he’s looking forward to, to get out there…I know he’s excited about the opportunity.

As for Maddox, he has started every one of the first midweek games this season.

In 25.1 innings pitched, Maddox has allowed 27 hits, 17 runs (13 earned) and 21 strikeouts.

“We’ll push Riley Maddox – he’ll start for us on Friday. We’ll keep Doyle on Saturday, and we’ll push Dennis to Sunday. That’s what the (pitching) will look like (moving forward),” Bianco explained.

Going into the 2024 season the rotation was RHP JT Quinn, LHP Dennis and RHP Grayson Saunier.

Ole Miss (17-8) returns home to Oxford tonight for a midweek matchup against Austin Peay (15-8). First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. CT.
