Ole Miss Safety Daijahn Anthony Looks Back at the Egg Bowl, Explains When He Knew Just How Big the Game Is

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Ole Miss senior safety Daijahn Anthony met with the media after the 17-7 victory over Mississippi State. Anthony experienced his first Egg Bowl on Thursday night after transferring in from Liberty.

“It’s a blessing, man, knowing how much it meant to all the Mississippi people and all the people who play in this game,” Anthony said. “It’s just a blessing to go out there and get the dub.”

The Rebels’ defense played a hard-fought game for four quarters against the Bulldogs, only giving up one score in the third quarter.

Something that coach (Pete) Golding tells us is play play-by-play. Don’t look at the scoreboard, don’t look at how much time is left. Just play by play and that is something that we had to work on throughout the season and we are just getting better on it and it showed tonight.”

The 2023 Rebels are comprised of a lot of transfer players, but Anthony knew this compilation was going to work.

I knew this was going to work from the beginning. (Ole Miss) brought a lot of transfers in from lower schools that were hungry. You have a group that full of hungry people, there’s like nothing that can stop us or get in our way. We just see the finish line.

Anthony added that the team doesn’t see what’s beside them or look at other teams. “We just try to win our races.”

As the regular season has come to a close, now the team waits until next Sunday to see what bowl game they are headed to.

“I’m just waiting to see what our schedule is going to be like from our coaches, my dad,” Anthony said. “When I get that schedule I am going to know exactly how to move.”

For Anthony and other transfer players, they got to see what this rivalry was all about in the days leading up to the game.

Tom Luke came into the team meeting on Tuesday or Monday and started crying. That’s when I knew it was go time. Cause for Tom Luke, this game meant a lot to him and he expressed how big of a game it is and I just felt that through him.

During the days leading up to the Egg Bowl, at practice the coaching staff played cowbells ringing over the speakers to get the team ready for what the atmosphere would be like.

“Something I do is try to drown out all the noise,” Anthony said. “You hear it during pregame, but when we start I don’t hear nothing or see nothing but the field.”

And for Daijahn, did he miss being home for Thanksgiving?

“This is my family away from my family,” Anthony said. “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else at this moment.”
