Ole Miss Adds SEC Experience to Pitching Staff with Commitment from Mississippi State’s Charlie Foster

OXFORD, Miss. — Ole Miss continues to aggressively reshape its pitching staff through the transfer portal, and the latest addition came Saturday from a familiar SEC rival.

Former Mississippi State left-handed pitcher Charlie Foster has committed to the Rebels, giving pitching coach Joel Mangrum another experienced arm as Ole Miss prepares for significant turnover on the mound heading into 2027. Foster arrives in Oxford after spending two seasons in Starkville, where he gained experience both as a starter and a reliever while competing in one of college baseball’s toughest conferences.

For Ole Miss, the appeal is obvious.

The Rebels are expected to lose a large portion of their pitching staff to graduation and the MLB Draft, making experienced arms a premium commodity this offseason. Foster not only brings SEC experience, but he also offers flexibility — a trait that could prove valuable as Mangrum assembles next season’s pitching plans.

During his time at Mississippi State, Foster appeared in 22 games and recorded 54 strikeouts while working in multiple roles. He tallied a 6.69 ERA and 0-3 record in nine starts and 36â…“ innings with 37 strikeouts and 22 walks. He began the 2026 season as part of the Bulldogs’ weekend rotation before transitioning into bullpen duties later in the year. That versatility is one of the reasons Foster became an attractive portal target. Whether he ultimately competes for a starting role or settles into a relief position remains to be seen, but having experience in both environments gives Ole Miss options.

The Rebels saw Foster firsthand this spring. The Georgia native started against Ole Miss during the SEC season and delivered one of his better outings of the year, allowing just two hits and one earned run over 4 2/3 innings while striking out three batters.

While his overall numbers did not always reflect his potential, Foster’s ability to generate strikeouts and his familiarity with SEC competition make him an intriguing addition for a program that has developed a reputation for maximizing pitching talent. That development component may be particularly important.

Since arriving in Oxford, Rebels’ pitching coach Joel Mangrum has earned praise for helping pitchers refine arsenals, improve command, and elevate overall performance. Several pitchers have taken significant steps forward under his guidance, and Foster becomes the latest arm that the Rebels believe could benefit from that environment.

The addition also continues a clear offseason trend.

Ole Miss has prioritized pitching depth early in the portal cycle, already securing commitments from Jacksonville State’s Eli Pillsbury, LSU’s Mavrick Rizy, USC Upstate’s Brent Stukes, and Georgia Tech’s Charlie Willcox.

Each brings a different profile. Pillsbury arrives as a proven starter with significant innings under his belt. Rizy adds SEC experience and bullpen depth. Stukes brings starting experience from the mid-major ranks. Willcox offers long-term upside and developmental potential. Foster fits somewhere in the middle — an experienced left-hander with versatility, SEC familiarity, and room for growth.

As Ole Miss begins preparing for life after several draft-eligible pitchers, finding capable arms who can contribute immediately has become a top priority. Foster’s arrival does not solve every question facing the Rebels’ pitching staff, but it provides another valuable piece as head coach Mike Bianco and Mangrum continue constructing next season’s roster.

And in today’s college baseball landscape, adding an experienced SEC left-hander through the transfer portal is rarely a move that goes unnoticed.
