No. 15 Ole Miss Baseball Forces Rubber Match with Game-Two Win Over No. 18 Alabama

No. 15 Ole Miss baseball defeated the No. 18 Alabama Crimson Tide 9-0 in what was an all-around dominant performance for the Rebels to even the series at Sewell-Thomas Stadium in Tuscaloosa.

Ole Miss had a great night at the plate, but the game was highlighted by starting pitcher Taylor Rabe, who held a no-hitter through 5.1 innings, and finished his night with 6 innings pitched, 1 hit, 1 walk, 1 hit batter, and 13 strikeouts, one shy of his career high which he set last week against Texas A&M.

Action started early for Ole Miss as the Rebels scraped a run across in the first when first baseman Will Furniss grounded out deep in the hole to the second baseman, allowing Judd Utermark to come across the plate and give Ole Miss a 1-0 lead.

The Diamond Rebs added on with a four-run fifth inning, started by shortstop Owen Paino leaving the yard with a solo home run.

Furniss then launched a home run of his own — a three-run shot, bringing his RBI total to four on the night. That made it 5-0, Rebels.

The Rebels continued to extend their advantage in the seventh behind another long ball, this time from catcher Austin Fawley, who sent a two-run shot deep into left field

Ole Miss continued the offensive onslaught with even more insurance in the ninth when Furniss plated yet another run, this time with a sacrifice fly, advancing his RBI total to five on the night.

Ole Miss’ scoring was capped by Hayden Federico advancing home on a wild pitch.

Ole Miss sent JP Robertson out for his third inning of relief for the ninth inning, and he delivered a 1-2-3 and secured the Rebels’ win.

A Look Ahead

Ole Miss and Alabama will face off one more time to conclude the regular season Saturday at 2 p.m. CT, in a must-win game for the Rebels, as they are on the verge of hosting a regional. The rubber match could secure an Oxford regional, while Alabama looks to hold their super-regional host position inside the country’s top 8 seeds.
