A Visit with QB Keegan Croucher: Elite 11 Finalist Talks Ole Miss Commitment, Golding, and Recruiting Push

OXFORD, Miss. — Keegan Croucher is without a doubt one of the best quarterbacks in the class of 2027. He was recently chosen to participate in the 2026 Elite 11 Finals in Los Angeles later this summer. The four-star, blue-chip recruit has been committed to Ole Miss since October 5, 2025.

This means he was committed to the team when all of the chaos unfolded last season with the Rebels’ former coach taking a new job — yet Croucher remained throughout it all. The Rebel Walk had the opportunity recently to sit down and talk with Keegan about his recruitment and his style of play.

“I was shocked. I really didn’t know what was going on.” Croucher said of all the coaching rumors last fall. “Obviously, I’m not there (in Oxford), so I have to trust what people say. That’s kind of a hard thing to do when that sort of thing happens, but I stuck with it,” he explained.

This obviously gives a little window into the mind of a recruit during a coaching change. With there being little-to-no information available, all Croucher could do was wait. While at the time he was not sure what the outcome would be, Croucher stayed with his pledge after Pete Golding was announced as the new head coach.

Coach Golding is a man you want to play for. He’s a blue collar guy, all about working better, making ourselves better people and better men.

If you are on X (formerly Twitter), then you have almost certainly seen Croucher serving as an enthusiastic recruiter for Ole Miss, often quoting a recruit’s post with a shark emoji, the callsign when Golding lands a recruit.

When I get there, I want to play with the best players on the planet. So I think, why not try to put my name out there, and show people who I am, and tell them why not Ole Miss?

Croucher, a native of New York, has transferred to the heralded Baylor School in Chattanooga, TN, the same school where current Ole Miss running back Shekai Mills-Knight attended. It was a decision that also comes with pressure. He said that he left his old school, Cheshire Academy, because, “I don’t want to say ‘outgrew,’ but I kind of outgrew what was there, and I wish nothing but the best for them. But I think it was the right decision for me and my family.”

He is moving down south to play in the hotbed of high school sports, as Friday Night Lights are a real thing and football is certainly king in the south. Last season, he threw for 1,692 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions on 143-for-207 passing. He also ran the ball 32 times for 211 yards.

In his own words, “I’m a sneaky athlete.” Coming in at 6-foot-4, weighing 205 pounds, Croucher certainly has the size to play in the SEC. He has a big arm and can read a defense like a college quarterback. Perhaps one of his best tools is his ability to sell fakes, as he is able to regularly trick defenders with his eyes.

(I) always strive to get better. There’s always something I want to learn.

When watching his film, his comparison in the pros would certainly be Joe Burrow, something that he also mentioned. Mechanically, they look similar, and Croucher’s ability to read a defense is similar to Burrow, as well. Obviously, there is a long way to go before Croucher reaches those heights, but the skillset is definitely there.

Croucher talked about his relationship with both returning starting QB Trinidad Chambliss as well as backup quarterback Walker Howard.

“I mean, he’s been awesome to me. I’ve gotten pretty close to Trinidad (Chambliss),” Croucher began.

He’s always in the facility. We hang out every time we go down there. So he’s been awesome. And, you know, a great guy to reach out to and ask some questions about Oxford, Ole Miss and the facility, you know, he’s been available for me to ask questions. And, you know, just a good guy. He helps me out. He wants the program to be in a good spot even after he leaves. So he’s been, he’s been awesome.

“I tell you, I’ve also gotten really close with the backup quarterback, Walker Howard,” Croucher continued. He’s been awesome. He’s probably even the guy that I’ve been around the most. He’s just kind of taken me in a little bit.”

Howard, the veteran of the room, has been the one to show Croucher around Oxford, but Chambliss has clearly been helpful as well. Both quarterbacks are helping the young QB in whatever aspect of the game — or of life — that he might want help with. It has made his experience in Oxford better, as the two Rebel quarterbacks are obviously great guides.

Croucher is one of the highest profile quarterback recruits in the country, and there is a legitimate possibility that he could be a five-star by the time signing day rolls around. He will participate in the 2026 Elite 11 Finals the end of this month. That event showcases the nation’s top rising senior quarterbacks (Class of 2027), and only 20 elite signal-callers have earned a coveted spot to participate.

Croucher is currently headlining a recruiting class that looks to reshape Ole Miss football and bring a new level of play to the Rebels. He will continue to have other big-name schools going after him, but if Golding and Ole Miss can get him to signing day, it will be a monumental moment for this coaching staff.
