‘We Are Just Loaded’: WR Johntay Cook Embraces Competition at Ole Miss
OXFORD, Miss. — Head coach Pete Golding brought in a great deal of talent at all positions from the transfer portal; however, the wide receiver room, in particular, has numerous instant-impact additions.
One of those standout newcomers is senior wideout Johntay Cook, a 5’11, 190-pound transfer from Syracuse.
Cook’s route to Ole Miss
Cook originally signed with the Texas Longhorns as a five-star prospect and the No. 3 wideout in the 2023 recruiting cycle over the likes of Alabama, Michigan, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, and LSU, among several others. He recorded 273 yards and two touchdowns on 32 catches across 18 games in two seasons with the Longhorns.
From there, he departed the program and joined Syracuse ahead of the 2025 season where he made 12 appearances and recorded 45 catches for 549 yards and two touchdowns.
The opportunity is real
Cook spoke to the media for the first time as a Rebel on Tuesday afternoon, and the first thing he discussed was why he chose Ole Miss, despite having many options in the portal.
“Just the opportunity. (QB) Trinidad (Chambliss), obviously, and I just felt like the time was right, you know. Right place, right fit,” Cook said. Of Chambliss, he later added: “Best quarterback in the country.”
The opportunity is real. Cook is joining a wide receiver room with many new faces fighting for their chance to take on a pivotal role; one of them is fellow Syracuse transfer Darrell Gill Jr., for whom Cook had high praise.
“That’s my dog, and you know, we’re just here. We’re battling, and we’re just two dogs in a fight with each other.” Cook said.
Later on, describing what he and Gill bring to the table, Cook first explained in depth what his own skills are and then described those of his teammate.
“I think that I run the entire route tree. I’ll make the first guy miss. And something that I’ve been getting better at over the course of my career, and I think this fall I’ll be the best that I’ve been at it, is blocking and really being involved in the run game and being able to help the team out without the ball in my hands….I think Gill, he stretches the field, big body, athletic, fast. He can also run the route tree, but more than anything, he’s going to go get the football. You put it up, he’ll come down with it more than not.“

Cook also spoke about how the wide receiver room has connected and how they match each other on the gridiron.
“It was kind of like love at first sight, if that makes sense. Like we all just jelled so easy and accepted each other for who we were, and there are so many different personalities that it’s kind of a beautiful thing, and like you just got so many bullets in a clip that it’s like we are just loaded.”

Cook and the Rebels continue through spring ball, looking to improve each day as the season opener in Nashville with the Louisville Cardinals on September 6 keeps inching closer.
