Ole Miss Football Spring Practice Report: Tuesday, April 14

OXFORD, Miss. — Ole Miss football continued spring practice Tuesday with media having an opportunity to watch for approximately 10 minutes. The on-field work we saw was much of the same — put return scenarios and some QB throws. As is typically the case with spring practice, we work to watch onfield activities as well as talk to those on the sidelines who have insight into team play.

Three offensive linemen stood out

It is still relatively unclear who the starting tackles will be for Ole Miss this season. What is without a doubt, however, is that there were three linemen who looked different during the media viewing. Two of the three that stood out happen to be two tackles. Terez Davis, a returning redshirt sophomore who is coming off of an injury last season, looked very quick today.

Additionally, Miami junior transfer Tommy Kinsler IV looked like a brick wall in the drills, as he barely jolted when hitting pads today.

The last one is an obvious one. Returning senior guard Patrick Kutas looked like the leader, not necessarily through words, but through action — much like he explained last week during his press conference. If there is anything to glean, it looks as if Davis and Kinsler are starting to separate themselves and have put themselves in a nice spot for Ole Miss this coming up season.

It’s important to note that not only is there a long way to go before the fall season begins, but also that we are given a limited amount of time to watch the team. There are still many hours of practice each week that we don’t see who might be excelling on those days. Nevertheless, in the time we were given today, Davis, Kinsler IV and Kutas looked very good.

The defensive line is a close-knit group

Associate head coach/defensive line coach Randall Joyner has a tight-knit group this season. Obviously, the leaders on the line continue to be Will Echoles, Kam Franklin, Jam Brown and others.

Florida defensive tackle transfer Michai Boireau, who wears an unconventional number in 88, looks very twitchy for his size. The six-foot-five, 355-pound lineman is a monster of a human being. A person of his size should not move nearly as smooth as he does.

This group was vocal amongst themselves and are clearly very close with each other. Joyner has a dangerous room with him, especially with insane depth at the defensive tackle position. Oregon transfer EDGE Blake Purchase looked good as well, but he was on the opposite side of the defensive line, making it a bit tougher to see him work.

The receiver room is starting to come together

Deuce Alexander is the sole returning production of consequence from last season in this year’s new-look wide receiver room. The Rebels also have returners like Caleb Cunningham, Samari Reed, and Dillon Alfred, who will all push for time. Ole Miss also brought in an infusion of new, proven talent. According to reports, Alexander, Cunningham, Auburn transfer Horatio Field, Syracuse transfer Darell Gill, and Virginia Tech transfer Isaiah Spencer are all leading the way so far.

Kentucky transfer Cameron Miller and the aforementioned Reed are also apparently making a push for playing time. Syracuse transfer Johntay Cook has also been looking good and could easily make an impact this season. This room is a relative unknown for now, and we won’t know until they start playing just how good this team is. But if Alexander’s comments last week are any indication, this is a very dangerous room.

QB2 might not be as clear-cut as everyone thought

The idea of Auburn transfer and Mississippi native Deuce Knight being the backup for Trinidad Chambliss is not an uncommon one, with many analysts expecting that to be the case. The highly-touted transfer certainly has the skills to be the backup. But Coach Golding hinted Tuesday at the fact that the battle for QB2 hasn’t been fully decided yet. Knight, AJ Maddox, and Louisiana transfer and former Rebel Walker Howard are all battling it out during the spring. It will be interesting to see who wins this battle, as it was proven last year just how important the backup is.

A bit of an injury update

What is known from practice today is that Kewan Lacy, Brycen Sanders, and South Carolina transfer Michael Smith were in yellow jerseys, from what we could see. Coach Golding told us in his presser today that none of the injuries on the team are season-ending, and he’s not worried about their status.

Wrap-up

We will have an assistant coach and players interviews this Friday, so stay tuned for that. Meet the Rebels is coming up on April 25, and fans will get the chance to meet the new players. Follow along with The Rebel Walk as we continue to bring you coverage of Spring practice.
