Two-Way Texas Talent Paris Melvin Jr. Has Ole Miss in His Final Four
OXFORD, Miss. — When you see “ATH” next to a football prospect’s name, it usually signifies an exceptional player who is versatile enough to play more than one position or on both sides of the ball. Such recruits often catch the attention of coaches like Lane Kiffin and Pete Golding because of the athlete’s multi-sport backgrounds, elite athleticism, and adaptability, especially in an era of tempo offenses and hybrid defensive packages.
Enter Paris Melvin Jr., a remarkable two-way player from Cy Springs in Houston, Texas—an undeniable exception to the norm. As a junior last season, the 4-star recruit scored 21 touchdowns as a wide receiver, running back, defensive back and special teams performer.

Melvin recently narrowed his choices down to four: Ole Miss, Houston, Baylor, and Arizona. After an official visit to Oxford with Coach Kiffin and staff, it’s clear that the Rebels have made a strong impression.
While Melvin hasn’t yet announced a specific date for his decision, he’s aiming to make his choice before kicking off his senior season.
The breakdown
We’ve had numerous opportunities to watch Melvin compete for Cy Springs. He ranks as the No.10 athlete in the 2026 class and the No. 20 overall prospect out of the Lone Star state, truly another gem of a two-way player who stood out on both sides of the ball.
During his junior campaign, he saw action at running back, quarterback, wide receiver and cornerback. He rushed for 1,091 yards and 18 TDs with a 7.4 yards per carry average. He completed 3 of 5 passes for 52 yards and 1 TD, and 1 INT. He tallied 22 receptions for 352 yards and 3 TDs on 16 yards per catch.
On the defensive side of the ball, Melvin recorded 13 tackles, 1 TFL and 1 INT. He has been a staple since he was a freshman for the Cy Springs varsity team, and there’s no question his senior season will be even more of a highlight reel in the making.
On Offense
With an impressive track record as a junior, Melvin has proven himself not just as a running back but also as a versatile wildcat option and slot receiver. His ability to adapt and excel in various roles makes him an invaluable asset.
What sets him apart? His athletic prowess shines through with his remarkable track and field metrics that highlight his explosive capabilities. This isn’t just another player; he possesses a unique movement style that enhances his playmaking versatility, making every touch an opportunity for greatness.
His vision on the field is razor-sharp, allowing him to navigate defenses with precision. He reads speed changes like a seasoned pro and showcases exceptional change-of-direction skills that keep defenders guessing.
On Defense
While he hasn’t seen nearly as many defensive reps, don’t underestimate his ability to create chaos on that side of the ball. His work as a seasoned offensive player is one of those x-factors that helps allow him to dissect the opposition’s offensive unit. With an impressive ability to break on the ball and a keen sense of coverage awareness, Melvin is proving that his athleticism, along with his exceptionally high football IQ, gives him what it takes to make an impact on the field in any situation.
And — there’s more. Melvin is also a force on the special teams unit. It is safe to say he brings his speed and agility to all phases of the game. He is the sort of player who could fill the instant need for the Rebels in so many ways, whether it be in the secondary or in Kiffin’s offense.

Herring-Olvedo sees college football the way championship programs do—from inside the personnel room. Every evaluation, every roster move, every recruiting battle tells a bigger story about identity, culture, and how a program is built to win in December, not just July.
With more than 15 years covering the SEC and the national recruiting landscape, Herring-Olvedo has built a reputation as one of the sport’s most respected personnel-driven voices—blending film evaluation, roster construction, and long-term program vision through a true front-office lens. Her coverage of powerhouse brands like Ole Miss Rebels and Kentucky Wildcatshas consistently gone beyond headlines, focusing instead on the blueprint behind winning programs: development, fit, culture, and recruiting strategy.
That foundation was formed early at Brown University, where she worked in player personnel and recruiting while competing as a student-athlete. Inside those recruiting operations rooms, she learned how elite organizations are truly built—through relentless evaluation, relationship building, projection, and trust in the board. Those experiences shaped the way she studies the game today: part scout, part storyteller, part architect.
Her analysis and reporting have appeared across major platforms including ESPN, NFL coverage spaces, USA Today Sports, and Saturday Down South. She also brought her personnel-minded approach to the airwaves as an on-air analyst for the Wake Up 502 College Football Show on Big X Sports Radio 96.1, where she became known for combining film-room detail with a wider understanding of roster identity and program trajectory.
In 2025, covering the rise of Houston Cougars football under Willie Fritz reignited the part of the sport that first drew her into football—the culture, the edge, the belief that a roster can reshape an entire city. That inspiration led to the launch of Coogs 365 Sports, a platform built to cover Houston athletics through a true scouting and recruiting lens while connecting the emotion of the game to the heartbeat of H-Town.
Now, Herring-Olvedo returns to The Rebel Walk where with an even deeper perspective shaped by years inside recruiting circles, national SEC coverage, and hands-on evaluation experience. Her return brings a familiar voice back to Ole Miss coverage—but with an evolved lens rooted in roster architecture, player development, and the modern realities of building championship-caliber football in the NIL and portal era.
For Herring-Olvedo, recruiting has never been about stars beside a name. It is about identifying competitors, projecting growth, and building a locker room capable of sustaining success. Her philosophy mirrors the best front offices in football: stack traits, trust culture, and never stop building.
