Ole Miss Baseball named NCAA Regional Host, Rebels welcome Jacksonville St., Clemson, Illinois

OXFORD, Miss. — On Sunday night, Ole Miss baseball learned the Rebels had earned the right to serve as a host for the 2019 NCAA Baseball Tournament, and Monday they learned who will be joining them at Swayze Field.

Regional No. 4 seed Jacksonville State (37-21), No. 3 seed Clemson (34-24) and No. 2 seed Illinois (36-19) are the other participants who will be welcomed by No. 12 overall seed Ole Miss (37-25) in the NCAA Oxford Regional.

Action begins with Illinois and Clemson kicking things off at 3 p.m. CT on Friday, May 31. The game will be televised on ESPNU. In the evening game Friday, Ole Miss opens play against Jacksonville State with first pitch set for 7 p.m. CT.

The Rebels also learned Monday that the Oxford Regional is paired with the Fayetteville Regional, which is hosted by No. 5 national seed Arkansas. The Razorbacks welcome Central Connecticut, TCU and Cal, and the winner of the Fayetteville Regional and Oxford Regional will meet in the Super Regionals.

Road to hosting

Most experts thought Ole Miss was out of the hosting conversation–but the Rebels went to Hoover and proved them all wrong. Coach Bianco’s team entered the tourney as the No. 7 seed and won four games over the course of six days, defeating top-15 teams in Arkansas, Georgia and Texas A&M along the way. The Rebels made the Championship Game and lost, 11-10, in a walk-off to Vanderbilt, the overall national No. 2 seed and No. 1 seed in the SEC tournament. Ole Miss’ impressive performance led to the team being selected as a Regional host.

The Rebels have earned a postseason bid for the 17th time during Bianco’s 19 seasons. Ole Miss is hosting an NCAA regional for the ninth time. All nine host bids have come during Bianco’s tenure.

It just means more

For the second straight season, Ole Miss is one of 10 SEC teams to make the NCAA Tournament. Ole Miss joins Vanderbilt, Georgia, Arkansas, Mississippi State and LSU as the six SEC teams to earn a host bid.
