Walk-Off Gut Punch: Ole Miss Falls to Arkansas 5-4 in Ninth-Inning
FAYETTEVILLE — One swing was all it took. With No. 17 Ole Miss just three outs away from escaping Baum-Walker Stadium with a hard-fought series win, Arkansas delivered a crushing blow in the bottom of the ninth, as a two-run walk-off home run ripped the game — and the series — away from the Rebels in a 5-4 loss to the No. 22 Razorbacks.
Freshman Christian Turner played hero for Arkansas, sending his second career home run and first SEC homer, for a two-run walkoff win in the bottom of the ninth inning.
“We had it set up and that’s not to put the blame on Hooks. It’s baseball, right? Nobody loves that phrase but it’s true,” Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco said after the game.
“Credit (Arkansas). Credit them for hitting a home run to get back in it with (Kuhio) Aloy and then getting the base hit and then the big home run with a guy off the bench…A tough weekend but after Friday night I thought our guys really bounced back and played their butts off. It just wasn’t meant to be.”

The Razorbacks struck in the first, when leadoff hitter Damian Ruiz sent a single up the middle, stole second, and was brought around by Kuhio Aloy to make it an early 1-0 Arkansas lead.
The Rebels answered in the top of the second, however, putting two runners on base with one out for Owen Paino, who skied a ball into left field for an opposite-field, three-run home run to give Ole Miss a 3-1 lead.

From that point on, the Razorbacks put together a pair of solo home runs from Zack Stewart in the fifth, and Aloy in the sixth to tie the game at three heading into the final third of the rubber game.
Ole Miss was reeling in the seventh, when JP Robertson, who came on in relief of Taylor Rabe, allowed two runners to begin the inning, before being relieved by Walker Hooks with no outs. Ole Miss elected to intentionally walk the bases loaded with one out to bring up a left-handed bat and set up a potential double play. However, Hooks did it all himself with back-to-back strikeouts to keep the game tied 3-3 after seven complete.

That tie was no more when Utermark led off the eighth with a record-tying, go-ahead home run, the 48th of his career, putting him at the top of the list for most home runs in program history alongside Kyle Gordon.

The solo shot gave Ole Miss a one-run lead in the top of the frame, and Hooks nailed a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half, giving Ole Miss a 4-3 advantage heading into the final inning of the weekend.
Ole Miss could provide no insurance in the top of the ninth, heading into the home half with a 4-3 lead and Hooks taking the mound for his third inning of relief.
Hooks seemed to lose some bite, understandable after pitching in back-to-back days, allowing counts to get deep before Turner turned a seven-pitch at-bat into a walk-off, two-run home run, his first time hitting the ball since April 10, giving Arkansas the win and the series.
A Look Ahead
It’s finals week, so Ole Miss has no midweek game this week. The Rebels will not return to the diamond until Friday, when they begin their final home series of the year against Texas A&M.
