Mayo, a standout defensive back, has quickly emerged as one of the more intriguing prospects in his class. With a rare combination of size, reach, and athletic fluidity, he brings a skill set that naturally translates to the SEC — where physical receivers and explosive passing attacks demand defensive backs who can match both strength and speed.
At 6-foot-4, 185-pounds, Mayo has size that is rare at his position. He has excellent ball-tracking skills and solid hands to match. He uses his length to his advantage, as if he initially gets beaten, his size allows him to still make a play on the ball. From a schematic standpoint, he checks multiple boxes. His aforementioned length allows him to disrupt passing lanes, while his movement skills give him the flexibility to stay with receivers downfield. Just as importantly, he has shown a willingness to be physical — something that remains a priority in a league where defensive backs are often asked to contribute in run support as much as coverage.
Mayo, if developed correctly, has the potential to be a true lockdown corner, as his size can serve as a black hole for opposing receivers.
Mayo is obviously a highly-touted recruit. Initially, it didn’t seem like Ole Miss was in the hunt, as it was announced that his top five teams were LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas A&M. Obviously, things changed, and it seems as if the battle came down to between Ole Miss and LSU. The Rebels won this battle, marking a huge recruiting win over their Magnolia Bowl rivals.
For Golding, the commitment reflects a broader trend within the program. Ole Miss is no longer just competing regionally for talent — it is consistently entering national recruiting battles and coming out ahead. Pulling a prospect like Mayo out of Texas speaks to both the program’s visibility and the direction it continues to move.
Mayo is a player that I’m sure Golding and the rest of this staff can’t wait to get their hands on, as he has tools that are rare and the skills to match. If Ole Miss can hold down his recruitment, the Rebels might have a new rising star in the defensive backfield.
