No. 17 Ole Miss Baseball Cruises to 19-2, Run-Rule Pounding of Murray State in Midweek Matchup

OXFORD, Miss. — The No. 17 Ole Miss Rebels hosted a highly-anticipated rematch against the Murray State Racers Tuesday night, taking away a 19-2 run-rule victory to collect their thirtieth win of the season.

Ole Miss rode the long ball, launching five home runs for seven of the nineteen Ole Miss runs.

Rebels starter Owen Kelly threw four no-hit innings, allowing just one walk and collecting six strikeouts while picking up the win and moving to 2-1 on the season.

Ole Miss opened the scoring in the second inning with a pair of RBI groundouts, first from Owen Paino with the bases loaded, followed by Dom Decker to put Ole Miss ahead 2-0.

The Rebels expanded their lead as they exploded for 8 runs in the fourth, begun by Tristan Bissetta smacking in Paino with an RBI single, followed by Decker racing home on a wild pitch before Ole Miss put together four home runs in the inning.

First, Judd Utermark put himself closer to history with a two-run shot.

Then, Hayden Federico and Topher Jones went back-to-back with solo shots, and Owen Paino capped off the inning with a two-run homer to give the Rebels a 10-0 lead after four complete.

Mike Bianco elected to go to the bullpen despite Kelly holding a no-hitter through four, handing the ball to Leo Odom. The Racers then broke the no-hit bid with a two-out single from Easton Romer; however, nothing materialized as Odom proceeded to end the inning with a strikeout.

Ole Miss’ night of the long ball was not over yet, as Utermark put himself two home runs away from the all-time Ole Miss home run record. He tied Tim Elko for second place with his forty-sixth career home run and second two-run shot of the night, giving Ole Miss a 12-0 lead in the fifth.

However, the fifth was long from over, as the Rebels proceeded to collect 7 more runs before recording an out, tallying nine runs in the inning.

The offense was finally silenced in the sixth, being set down 1-2-3, setting up Jake Reigert for his first appearance as a Rebel in the seventh.

The Racers finally put themselves on the board when Jake Slade left the yard with a two-run blast for the game’s sixth home run. However Ole Miss stopped it there, preserving the 19-2 win.

A Look Ahead

Ole Miss is now set for a date with the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs for a three game set at Swayze Field this weekend.
