Twenty-Two Names to Know for the Ole Miss Season: No. 11 Trey Amos

OXFORD, Miss. – As we lead up to week one in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium for the kickoff of Ole Miss football’s 2024 season, The Rebel Walk team is highlighting one player each day. We’ll break down who they are, how they got here, and what we expect from each.

Today, we take a look at the No. 11 player on our list, DB Trey Amos!

Following the preview of TJ Dottery and Chris “Pooh” Paul Jr., we will stay on the defensive side of the ball and move into the secondary, where Trey Amos will likely be the Rebels’ starting cornerback.

How did Trey Amos arrive at Ole Miss?

Trey Amos closed out his high school career as a three-star and decided to pursue his passion for college football at the University of Louisiana, which is only 30 minutes down the road from his hometown of New Iberia.

Through his first two years with the Rajin Cajuns, Amos had collected just 24 total tackles with one interception. Fortunately, in the 2022 season, the 6-foot-1 cornerback flipped the switch and began breaking out of his shell. He finished his junior season with 32 total tackles and an impressive seven pass deflections.

Following his breakout season, Amos decided to enter the transfer portal, where he was recruited by Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide. During his time with the Tide, Amos became a crucial rotational piece where he was able to learn from two NFL players, Terrion Arnold (first-round pick) and Kool-Aid Mckinstry (second-round pick), while also soaking up knowledge from the best college football coach of all time.

Following the departure of Nick Saban, Trey Amos entered the transfer portal and met with Pete Golding, who had coached several of Amos’ teammates at Alabama. It wasn’t long before Amos announced his commitment to Ole Miss in mid-January, looking to enhance his draft stock with one year of eligibility remaining.

Career Outlook

As stated above, Amos took his game to the next level in his junior year of college when he became an elite defender. Though he didn’t have the opportunity to play a starting role at Alabama, he developed and matured in every way possible.

Amos managed to deflect six passes last season while playing in both the SEC championship and the college football playoffs, two games in which he has the chance to play for consecutive years. It’s also extremely notable to acknowledge the production of McKinstry and Arnold, who Trey practiced with for an entire year of his career.

Arnold finished 2023 with a whopping 63 total tackles, 12 pass deflections, and five interceptions. As for McKinstry, the stud closed out his year with 32 total tackles and seven pass deflections. There is no doubt that Amos will bring a similar amount of pass break-up ability to the field for Pete Golding this fall.

Heading into 2024

Entering his final year of eligibility, Amos will look to improve in every aspect of his game to ensure that he’s selected in one of the top rounds of the 2024 draft.

Despite finding different amounts of success throughout his collegiate career, Amos has never had the chance to be a starting defensive back in the SEC, and here at Ole Miss, he finally has the opportunity.

Camp Notes

So far in camp, we’ve seen Amos adjust quickly to Pete Golding’s complex defensive scheme, proving his mental awareness on the football field. At the same time, he’s found himself in consistent one-on-one battles with Ole Miss receiver Tre Harris, who is arguably the best wide receiver in the SEC.

Amos’ man coverage ability is going to be vital when Ole Miss faces SEC receivers who are just as talented as Tre Harris.

When the Rebels take the field on August 31st, there is no question that No. 9 on defense is going to become an immediate fan favorite. As always, stay tuned to The Rebel Walk for more!
