Injury Update: Mike Bianco Provides Injury Update on Ole Miss Freshman Pitcher Grayson Gibson
HOOVER, Ala. — The Ole Miss Rebels were eliminated from the SEC Baseball Tournament following a 10-8 loss to the Missouri Tigers on Tuesday in the first game of the tournament.
Following the loss, Rebels’ manager Mike Bianco spoke to the media and among his comments regarding the game, he also provided a positive update on true freshman pitcher Grayson Gibson as Ole Miss heads into regionals.
“If everything would have went as planned, he would have been ready to pitch on Thursday in some capacity. He’s had a few live BPs, and he’s done really well. Looks like he did prior to the injury and the layoff. I think he’s happy, Joel’s happy, everybody was happy with where he is. If we just didn’t stick around long enough. What does that look like? Is it more live BP? Is it more of inter-squad? We obviously weren’t preparing even on Tuesday afternoon to go back to Oxford.“

This is a great sign for Ole Miss heading into the regional. Gibson has not appeared since April 7th against Alcorn State where he suffered an unknown injury. However, before the injury, Gibson earned the midweek starting pitching role as well as pitching some big relief innings early in the season, so getting him back as NCAA postseason play begins could be huge for the Rebels.
Gibson is a 6-foot-1, 210-pound left-handed pitcher out of Tampa, Florida, and he currently holds a 1-1 record over 8 appearances with a 3.38 ERA, 16 strikeouts, and 4 walks in 16.0 innings pitched. Gibson also holds just a .200 batting average against and a 25 percent strikeout rate.
With the pitching staff struggling in the SEC tournament, regaining Gibson could be crucial, especially with the extra time to get back nearing 100%.
Ole Miss awaits its postseason regional tournament location, which will be announced on Monday, May 25, at 11 a.m. CT, with the first game set for May 29 at a time that is to be determined.
