Rebels drop hard-fought road contest to Oklahoma, 69-59
OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss women’s basketball team dropped a hard-fought road matchup to the Oklahoma Sooners 69-59 Sunday afternoon in the Rebels’ second loss of the season.
The Rebels took their first lead of the game midway through the fourth quarter, but a 15-2 run by the Sooners to end the game ended their hopes of winning.
Angel Baker was the leading scorer for the Rebels with 22 points while shooting 50% from the floor. Snudda Collins was the only other Rebel in double-figures with 16 points. All of her points, except for a free throw, came from the three-point line as she shot 5-12 from deep.
However, the Rebels were in unfamiliar territory when it came to one statistical category which helped Oklahoma prevail: rebounding.
A great Rebel rebounding team was out-rebounded 48-34 for the game, including being outrebounded 15-11 on the offensive boards. This led to 18 second-chance points for the Sooners.
The defense played a relatively good game, forcing 19 turnovers and not allowing the Sooners to score in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. However, the Rebel offense could not capitalize on the Sooner turnovers. The Rebels were outscored 17-9 in points off turnovers.
Coach Yo’s Rebel squad will look to bounce back from its second loss of the season (7-2) next Sunday back in Oxford against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks. Tipoff at the SJB Pavilion is scheduled for 1 p.m. on SEC Network.
