Most Impactful Rebels for 2019: No. 28 Jalen Julius
OXFORD, Miss. — As we count down the days until the Ole Miss season opener against Memphis in the Liberty Bowl, we are releasing who we think the Top 50 Most Impactful Players will be for the Rebels this season. This series is a way for Ole Miss fans to learn more about players to keep an eye on this fall.
With 28 days before kickoff, coming in at No. 28…
Jalen Julius
Free safety Jalen Julius was listed by ESPN as a four-star prospect when he signed with Ole Miss in the class of 2015. He was ranked as the No. 20 athlete in the country per ESPN, and in his senior year helped his high school team at West Orange to an 11-1 record while playing running back, wide receiver, cornerback, and kick returner. As a senior, Julius rushed for 493 yards and seven touchdowns on 38 attempts along with two kick returns for touchdowns.
Julius, a 5-foot-10, 189-pound Winter Garden, Florida native, redshirted his first season in Oxford. Then in 2016, as a redshirt freshman, he was named to the Freshman All-SEC second team by Athlon. He played in all twelve games and made eight starts at cornerback while recording 21 tackles, two pass deflections, and one and a half tackles for loss on his way to Freshman All-SEC honors.

As a redshirt sophomore in 2017, Julius made nine game appearances including three starts at cornerback, notching 15 tackles and one pass breakup. Last season, he appeared in all twelve games for the Rebels and made eight starts at cornerback. He registered 34 tackles, three pass breakups, and two forced fumbles.
In 2019, Julius will be transitioning from cornerback to free safety during his final season in Oxford. He did a very good job in the spring at the free safety spot. Heading into fall camp, he is listed as the starter along with Armani Linton, with sophomore Kam White backing up the two senior defensive backs.
In his fall camp press conference Thursday, Coach Luke mentioned Julius’ move to safety.
“I really like the addition of moving Jalen Julius back there. A lot of teams are playing 11 personnel and running the slots on fades. That’s a tough matchup for a big safety. Jalen can cover there. It gives you a little bit more freedom to do some things. I’m excited.”
Head Coach Matt Luke on Jalen Julius
The Landshark secondary will count on Julius to be the last line of defense against the deep ball threat this season. We’re confident the experienced defensive back will excel at free-safety under the guidance of defensive coordinator Mike MacIntyre.
Keep an eye out on No. 26 this fall!
