Getting to know Ole Miss defensive coordinator Mike MacIntyre

Now that Ole Miss has hired a defensive coordinator, let’s take a look at Mike MacIntyre’s coaching stops and results. 

Early career

  • Graduated from Brentwood Academy (Jalen Ramsey and Derek Barnett’s alma mater) 
  • Played defensive back at Vanderbilt  (1984-1985)
  • Played defensive back at Georgia Tech (1987-1988)
  • Graduate assistant at Georgia (1990-1991)
    • Won 1991 Independence Bowl
  • Davidson defensive coordinator (1992)
  • Head Coach of the Plattling Black Hawks in Germany (1992)
  • UT-Martin defensive coordinator (1993-1996)
  • Temple defensive coordinator (1997-1998)

MacIntyre’s first stop in Oxford

  • Hired at Ole Miss by former Rebels’ head coach David Cutcliff
    • Wide receivers coach (1999-2000)
    • Defensive backs coach (2001-2002)
  • Played a role in recruiting Ole Miss legend and future Hall-of-Famer Patrick Willis

MacIntyre takes on the NFL

  • Hired by coaching legend Bill Parcells at the Dallas Cowboys 
    • Defensive backs coach (2003-2006)
  • New York Jets defensive backs coach (2007)

  • Improved Blue Devils’ defense by allowing 67.4 fewer yards per game and 9.8 fewer points per game

  • San Jose State head coach (2010-2012)
    • Improved record every season 
      • 1-12 (2010)
      • 5-7 (2011)
      • 11-2 (2012)
    • 2012 recruiting class ranked best in the WAC
    • Gave San Jose State its first ever BCS Top 25 ranking 
    • Took Spartans to 2012 Military Bowl after 6-year drought
      •  Beat an 8-win Bowling Green team, 29-20
  • Colorado Head Coach (2012-2018)
    • Finished 6th in the Pac-12 South his first 3 seasons 
      • 4-8 (2013)
      • 2-10 (2014)
      • 4-9 (2015)
    • Finished 1st in the Pac-12 South in 2016
      • Reached as high as # 9 in the AP Top 25
      • Played in the Pac-12 Championship against Washington (who went on to play in the 2016 College Football Playoff)
      • Finished 10-4, losing to Oklahoma State in the 2016 Alamo Bowl
    • Named 2016 Pac-12 Coach of the Year 
    • Won 2016 Walter Camp Coach of the Year Award

Coach MacIntyre brings a lot of experience to the table, including head coaching experience.  It also helps to be able to tell recruits you have a former National Coach of the Year on staff, one who has recruited guys like Patrick Willis to Ole Miss. 

With his experience and credentials, Coach MacIntyre will look to get the Ole Miss defense back to Landshark levels of old.
