Built for the SEC: Edge Rusher Jonathan Maldonado Already Making His Presence Felt at Ole Miss
OXFORD, Miss. — The Ole Miss football team has many new faces in the facility, and edge rusher Jonathan Maldonado is one who is already standing out.
The Nevada transfer recently spoke with Ole Miss media, introducing himself and also outlining his portal process and schematic fit.
He opened his press conference describing his portal process, and it was a little simpler than other newcomers have described.
“It wasn’t too much really going on with the process. I committed in what it was two days within the the portal opening. I knew I wanted to come to one of the best in the nation. Ole Miss had a really good year this last year. The south definitely has the best football in my opinion, especially trenches-wise. So, I knew I kind of wanted to go in that direction. They’ve been on me probably since the jump, just believed in me all throughout what I was doing the this last year obviously. So I think it just made it super easy. I came here, had everything I wanted. Obviously it’s beautiful here and just ready to win some games honestly.“
Johnathon Maldonado on why he choice Ole Miss
Maldonado joined The Rebel Talk a few months ago to talk about his journey to Ole Miss and what he hopes to accomplish with the Rebels.
The Monrovia, California native talked this week on how Pete Golding’s defensive scheme benefits him and allows him to excel.
“Defensive ends in this scheme, I mean, even the last couple years have excelled, but definitely just letting us play to our strengths…,” Maldonado began. “Each and every one of us are built different, move different, and do different things that could all help the team win. So, the fact that they could put a specific person, whether it’s like, rushing the three technique or rushing at the five technique, whatever it may be, just to help the team win, I think that’s probably the biggest thing. It really is not, ‘okay, just this one guy is going to be in there.’ It’s whichever guy does whatever best, we’re going to put him in whatever spot and we’re going to rock out and roll.”
Defensive ends have indeed excelled in this system over the past few years, even if they only have one year of eligibility remaining when they arrive via the portal. Princely Umanmielen, for example, joined Ole Miss for just one season after departing Florida, but accumulated over 10 sacks, en route to finishing in second place in sacks in the SEC.
Maldonado stands out right away on sheer presence alone. At 6-foot-6 and 250 pounds, he has the kind of frame that naturally draws attention, and he’s already added another 15 pounds since arriving at Ole Miss. When he extends his arms, the impact is even more noticeable, revealing an enormous wingspan—one he estimated, with a grin, to be somewhere in the “70-something” range.
Maldonado discussed his style of play he brings into the room of talented defensive linemen.
“I think my greatest strength is length…I got long arms, you know, you can see for yourself…I think it’s what 70-something (inch wing span) both ways,” he said.
“I don’t know. But I definitely play with length and strength for sure as well. I try to keep guys, I mean they look at the film, man, and they try not to touch me…I get in on the run….I know I’m a leaner type guy, but I definitely put my head in there, put my nose in there. physical I would say for sure and honestly relentless. I don’t think there’s any play — whether it’s in practice at Nevada or last four years — where I’m walking jogging or not really caring about whatever the play or you know sport has to offer. I love football man. I’m always running to the ball. I’m always going to be around wherever anything’s happening. So I think that’s how I would describe myself.” Maldonado explained.
Off the field, Maldonado spoke about the adjustment to the south and what he appreciates about Oxford.
“The farthest I’ve been (is) Nevada. California, Nevada and now I’m here. So, it’s been quite an adjustment,” Maldonado commented. “A little bit different. A lot quieter. It ain’t no city life. I mean, Nevada, they got casinos. They got a whole bunch of stuff you worry about. You come here, man, I kick up my feet. It’s pretty damn quiet, dude. I don’t hear anything. I think it’s very good to focus on ball. I came here for my last year strictly to get better. So, I think that’s perfect.”
Jonathan Maldonado
As Ole Miss continues to reshape its roster through the portal, Maldonado already looks the part of the next edge rusher to thrive in Oxford. With his size, length, and relentless approach, he fits seamlessly into a system that has consistently produced impact players up front. Now, with a full offseason to develop and a clear opportunity ahead, Maldonado isn’t just another new face — he’s a name to watch as the Rebels look to carry their defensive momentum into the 2026 season.
Maldonado and the Rebels kick off the 2026 season on September 6, at 6:30 PM CT against the Louisville Cardinals in Nashville.
