Player of the Weekend: Ole Miss first baseman Jackson Ross enjoys monster performance in High Point Series

OXFORD, Miss. — Ole Miss baseball made quite the turnaround after the 7-3, game-one loss to the High Point Panthers Friday. The Rebels responded in games two and three with two run-rule shortened games, combining for 37 runs. Ole Miss mashed 10 home runs in the series, led by Jackson Ross who is my pick for Player of the Weekend.

He’s also the D1 Baseball SEC Player of the Week for this week.

Ross was on a tear against High Point. He paced the Ole Miss offense while going 7-for-9 with four home runs and 10 RBIs over the weekend for a batting average of .778 through the three games.

The senior transfer from Florida Atlantic finished with multiple hits and at least one home run in each of the three games. Ross entered the weekend hitting .200 and his terrific weekend at the plate has catapulted him to a .417 average through eight games.

While the game one defeat was far from desirable, it was the start of an amazing weekend for Ross. He turned in a 3-4 night at the plate with a home run and two RBI. His seventh inning two-out home run cut High Point’s lead to 7-3 but wasn’t enough to mount a late-inning comeback for the Rebs. Ole Miss lost the series opener, 7-3.

In game two, the Rebs jumped on High Point early by plating four runs in the bottom of the first. Ole Miss wouldn’t score again until Ross’ two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning that stretched the Rebels’ lead to 6-2. In the bottom of the sixth, back-to-back walks from Andrew Fischer and Ethan Lege would set the scene for Ross’ second home run of the day, that extended the Rebel lead to 10-2. Ross finished Saturday 2-for-3 with two home runs, five RBI and a walk. Ole Miss won 12-2.

Sunday was a fun day at the ballpark for the Rebels. Ole Miss jumped out to an astonishing 11-0 lead in the bottom of the first. In that 11-run inning, Jackson Ross drew a walk in his first plate appearance and — wait for it — then launched a three-run home run into the parking lot of Oxford-University Stadium. In his final three plate appearances, Ross would draw two more walks and

Congratulations to Jackson Ross and the Rebs on the series win! It was good to see the bats come alive at Swayze. Ole Miss will look to stay hot with two home midweek games this week. They welcome Arkansas Little Rock to town Tuesday and Missouri State on Wednesday. Stay tuned to The Rebel Walk for all your Ole Miss sports coverage.
