Virginia Tech transfer tight end Dae’Quan Wright set to visit Ole Miss

OXFORD, Miss. — Lane Kiffin and the Rebels hosted tight end Dae’Quan Wright this weekend, a rising junior from Virginia Tech who entered the transfer portal in December, and shortly after his visit, Wright announced his commitment.

Wright, who started at Virginia Tech this fall, entered the transfer portal with two years of eligibility remaining. The versatile, 6-4, 235-pounder was utilized as hybrid receiver at Virginia Tech, often spreading out wide. He was responsible for 44 catches and 510 yards over his first two years as a Hokie.

While many will see Wright as a depth piece behind Caden Prieskorn, I believe his potential goes a lot farther than that.

Similar to former Ole Miss tight end Michael Trigg, Dae’Quan has the ability to be used as a hybrid tight end in Lane Kiffin’s offense — and he brings proven experience from his former Power Five school.

During his two seasons at Virginia Tech, Wright collected 44 receptions for 510 yards. Prieskorn would likely be deemed the bigger red-zone threat between the two, but if the Rebs find themselves in a game where they are relying heavily on their passing attack, Wright would become the perfect substitute for Caden.

If Dae’Quan can enter the game, open up the middle of the field, and pick up a block or two, he would greatly benefit a receiving corps that is already considered one of the best in the country as we head into next season.

Another reason why Wright could play such an important part in the ‘24 offense is due to the fact that Ole Miss does not have much depth at tight end after Prieskorn. Sure, Hudson Wolfe will see a good portion of playing time, but as we’ve seen, Wolfe has been used more as a traditional, blocking tight end rather than a receiving one.

As a true junior, Wright has an unbelievable amount of potential, especially if coached by Lane Kiffin, who has a history of coaching standout tight ends. Between OJ Howard at Alabama, Mackey Award winner Harrison Bryant at FAU, or Kenny Yeboah at Ole Miss, Lane has proven that versatile tight ends are a necessity to his offense.
