Ole Miss safety Trey Washington discusses what stands out about Penn State offense

OXFORD, Miss. Wednesday morning in Atlanta, Ole Miss safety Trey Washington spoke about his teammates and gave a scouting report on the Penn State defense in preparation for Saturday’s Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

No word yet…

Washington, the Rebels’ leading tackler during the regular season, has yet to publicly announce his intentions for the 2024 season. As a junior, he has the option to stay for his senior year, go to the NFL draft or, of course, hit the transfer portal.

If Washington were to return for his senior year at Ole Miss, he would be a leader amongst the many new faces in the secondary from the transfer portal. He also tied for the team high in interceptions, as well, with three on the year.

While Washington did not speak about his future during Wednesday’s press conference, he had this to say about his teammates.

I love these guys. I’ve seen a lot of growth from game one to this game. Their toughness, play-to-play and their willingness to work throughout fall camp and now to this point has been very admirable. I love these guys for sure.

Penn State Offense

The Nittany Lions were the number one scoring offense in the Big 10 at the end of the regular season, averaging 37.2 points per game.

Although quarterback Drew Allar had a solid year, it was the combo in the backfield of Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton that helped Penn State’s offense excel.

The two backs both rushed for 800+ yards on the year and tallied 14 combined touchdowns. Last season in 2022, Singleton rushed for 1,000+ yards and 12 touchdowns as a freshman.

Washington was asked in the breakout room what he noticed about Singleton on film.

I think he does a good job of being physical and running through arm tackles. That’s one thing that stood out to me.

While Allar’s overall stats may not jump off the page, one certainly stands out. The Penn State QB did not turn the ball over very often, only throwing one interception on the year.

Washington spoke about Allar while on the podium with Rebel defensive linemen Jared Ivey and JJ Pegues.

I would say the quarterback’s arm talent stuck out. He can make a lot of throws downfield, and he has an incredibly strong arm…you can tell he’s really smart. He takes his checkdowns when they’re there. He’s not really forcing the ball down field when he doesn’t have to.

As far as Allar’s targets, Washington noted that ‘No. 1’ was the obvious answer when asked who stood out. That would be Keandre Lambert-Smith, Allar’s top target on the year with 54 catches and 673 yards.

Although recognizing the Nittany Lions’ number one target, Washington also singled out Trey Wallace, who he played 7-on-7 with once before.  “Yeah No. 6 (Henry Wallace III)…I actually played 7-on-7 with him…he has jump ball skills, you better be ready,” Washington advised.

Washington noted while on the podium that the Penn State offense to him most resembles Arkansas from the SEC with Allar’s size and the tall, lanky receiver room.

Trey Washington and his Rebel teammates will continue to prepare for Saturday’s Peach Bowl against Penn State, who is favored over Ole Miss at 4.5 currently. Kickoff is set for Noon CT on ESPN.
