Rebels extend win streak to nine in 66-58 road victory over Georgia

OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss women’s basketball team got its first win in Athens since 2010 Thursday night in a 66-58 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs. The victory marked just the second win in program history for the Rebels in Stegeman Coliseum.

The victory propelled Ole Miss to a 5-0 start in the SEC, marking the best start to conference play by a Rebel team since the 2006-07 season. It also extended the team’s winning streak to nine games.

Ole Miss started off strong on the offensive end with a nine point (4-4 FGs) first quarter from guard Myah Taylor. Her season point average per game was 6.1 coming into the contest, so she eclipsed that easily in one quarter. She would finish the game with 11 points on 5-9 shooting. Taylor was also the game-leader in assists with eight.

Taylor was one of three Rebels to finish in double figures, joining routine scorers Angel Baker and Madison Scott.

Angel Baker’s 20 points came quite efficiently, as she shot 7-11 (64%) from the field while also going 5-6 from the free throw line. She also grabbed four boards.

Madison Scott also put together an efficient game, scoring 18 points on 8-13 (62%) shooting. She spread the wealth throughout her entire stat sheet by adding seven rebounds and five assists.

However, in a staggering number, only three points for the Rebels came from its bench, all of which were scored by forward Rita Igbokwe. This was the lowest scoring output from the Rebel bench this season.

Head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin’s trademark defense was yet again suffocating when it needed to be, especially in the second quarter, where the Rebels gave up just eight points. Ole Miss was outscored in the second half 36-34, but timely stops allowed the Rebs to prevail.

Overall, the Ole Miss defense held the Bulldogs to 39% shooting. More impressively, the Bulldogs only converted on one three-pointer in eleven attempts. The Rebels also forced 15 Bulldog turnovers, led by Madison Scott with four steals.

When Ole Miss has held opponents to 60 points or fewer this season, the Rebels are undefeated. In fact, in every win of the season, this has been true (16-0).
