No. 2 Ole Miss run-rules Alcorn State, 16-1; Rebels move to 11-1 on season

OXFORD, Miss. — Alcorn State’s Jermel Ford hit a one-out, solo home run to give the Braves a 1-0 lead over Ole Miss in the top of the first. But that’s only lead the visitors would have as the Rebels came storming back to defeat ASU, 16-1, in yet another run-rule victory that came in seven innings.

No. 2 Ole Miss moves to 11-1 on the season.

From the get-go in the bottom of the first, the Rebels took advantage of the Braves’ struggling pitching. Alcorn State’s Austin Guzman took the mound and walked the first five Ole Miss batters, giving the Rebs a 2-1 lead before first baseman Jamaal Green came in to take over on the mound for Guzman.

Reagan Burford added one more before the end of the inning on a sacrifice fly to center field that pushed the Ole Miss lead to 3-1.

In the bottom of the second, Ole Miss scored a run on some heads up base running from Peyton Chatagnier. The Ole Miss second baseman stole three bases on one play and gave the Rebels a 4-1 lead.

I was going first move, but I did get picked off. Then I ran to second luckily, I was safe. For some reason the third baseman was closer to second, and I noticed ‘Hey, I can beat that out’. So, I ran to third, I slid in. It was a closer play than I wanted it to be, and then I look up and Coach Clem is just pointing at home, like nobody is there, just go…so I took off. It was unbelievable. I’ve never ever seen that happen.

In the bottom of the third, Captain Tim Elko got the Rebels’ first hit of the night on a double down the left field line.

Justin Bench advanced Elko to third on a fly out to foul territory in right field. Hayden Dunhurst then drove him in to score on a sacrifice fly to right field, increasing the lead to 5-1.

Reagan Burford came up next and doubled to left field, advancing to third on a wild pitch. Hayden Leatherwood reached on a walk, putting runners on the corners for Knox Loposer who drove both Burford and Leatherwood in to score on a double down the left field line. Peyton Chatagnier would then follow with a two-run home run to left field to make the Rebels’ lead jump to 9-1 after three complete.

The Rebels would add seven more runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Banks Tolley was walked with the bases loaded, bringing in Justin Bench who reached via a single earlier in the inning.

Loposer was then hit by a pitch, bringing in Kemp Alderman to score. Alderman was pinch running for Hayden Dunhurst who reached on a walk.

Chatagnier continued the inning by driving in two more runs on a single through the left side of the infield. Loposer added another after scoring from third on a wild pitch.

Justin Bench was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that scored another run. Kemp Alderman was walked with the bases loaded, brining home one more making the score 16-1 after four innings.
