Most Impactful Rebels for 2019: No. 19 Dontario Drummond

OXFORD, Miss. — As we count down the days until the Ole Miss season opener against Memphis in the Liberty Bowl, we are releasing who we think the Top 50 Most Impactful Players will be for the Rebels this season. This series is a way for Ole Miss fans to learn more about players to keep an eye on this fall.

With 19 days before kickoff, coming in at No. 19…

Dontario Drummond

Wide receiver and junior college transfer Dontario Drummond was a consensus three-star prospect, according to ESPN, Rivals, and 247Sports, when he signed with Ole Miss in the class of 2019.

During his career at East Mississippi Community College, Drummond set the all-time school records for receptions and receiving yards with 95 catches for 1,466 yards and 21 touchdowns. The Laurel, Miss. native was named a first team NJCAA All-American as a sophomore after leading his team to back to back JUCO Championships in 2017 and 2018.

The 6-foot-1, 204-pound junior enrolled at Ole Miss this January and went through spring practices with the team.

At Ole Miss Media Day, wide receivers coach Jacob Peeler visited with The Rebel Walk about the JUCO WRs transition to life in the SEC. “It is always an adjustment for a junior college player,” said Peeler.

You don’t question his success. You look at his high school. He was a state champion in football, state champion in basketball, a two-time champion at East Mississippi and all-time leading receiver, so he’s had success everywhere he’s been.

“There’s always a little bit of a learning curve,” Peeler continued. “No different from a high school kid when you put him into a new offensive system and the speed of the game is so much different between the SEC and JUCO and high school. So, I thought about midway through the spring, we really started to see him take strides and really get comfortable. Not only in practice speed, but also comfortable with the offensive system.”

As the Rebels entered fall camp, Peeler noted Drummond’s physical presence.

“You look at him right now,” said Peeler. “He’s really filled out his body. He looks comfortable. He looks confident, so I’m excited to see what he can do.”

Drummond has had success everywhere he’s been, and we expect big things from one of the newest members of the Nasty Wide Outs.

Watch out for No. 11 on the Rebels’ offense this fall!
