OXFORD, Miss. — As we count down the days until the Ole Miss season opener against Memphis in the Liberty Bowl, we are releasing who we think the Top 50 Most Impactful Players will be for the Rebels this season. This series is a way for Ole Miss fans to learn more about players to keep an eye on this fall.
With 21 days before kickoff, coming in at No. 21…
Jon Haynes
Jon Haynes was a consensus three-star prospect according to 247Sports, Rivals, and ESPN, out of Jones County Junior College (Miss.) when he signed with Ole Miss in the class of 2019.
The Benoit, Miss. native was ranked the No. 5 JUCO safety in the country according to 247Sports Composite rankings. As a freshman at JCJC, he notched 30 tackles and one interception along with earning MACJC Special Teams Player of the Week after returning a blocked field goal eighty yards for a touchdown. As a sophomore, he tallied 44 tackles along with three interceptions.

The 5-foot-11, 212-pound Haynes, who chose Ole Miss over Florida, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Memphis and others, early enrolled at Ole Miss and went through 2019 spring drills.
Defensive coordinator Mike MacIntyre praised Haynes this spring on his transition from JUCO. “Jonathan is doing some real good things,” said MacIntyre. “I’ve been very pleased with the progress he has made. I like how physical Jonathan is and I like how eager he is to learn and get things right. He’s got work to do, as all our safeties do, but he’s certainly made an impression on me so far.”
Haynes made four tackles in the Grove Bowl to wrap up spring practices.
Haynes expressed appreciation for Mike MacIntyre and his coaching style. “He’s a great coach who knows what he is talking about and he knows how to teach where you can understand what he’s showing you,” Haynes explained.
“I’m a physical safety who likes playing near the box but I also like to cover. Wherever coach puts me, though, he’s going to get my best.“
Ole Miss safety Jon Haynes
Early in fall camp, Haynes was practicing as the starter at strong safety; however, he was injured last week in practice and is said to be day-to-day. If Haynes is healthy, look for No. 5 to have a big impact in the secondary this fall for the Rebels!
