BREAKING: Ole Miss Ace Cade Townsend Exits Early vs. Texas with ‘Shoulder Discomfort’
AUSTIN, Texas — The focus of today’s game between Ole Miss and Texas quickly shifted from the scoreboard to the health of one of the Rebels’ most important players.
Ole Miss starting pitcher Cade Townsend, who entered the weekend as one of the nation’s most dominant arms, was forced to leave the game in the second inning after experiencing discomfort in his shoulder.
Rebels head coach Mike Bianco confirmed during the broadcast of the game that Townsend was dealing with soreness and that the decision to remove him was made out of precaution.
“We’ll have to wait until we get back home and doctors look at it,” Bianco said during the ESPN broadcast.
“Shoulder soreness and didn’t feel right. It’s not something you mess with. We didn’t feel like he could go and had discomfort so we took him out.”

Early Trouble on the Mound
Townsend did not appear to have his usual command from the start of the outing. The right-hander allowed two runs in the opening inning and struggled to find consistency in the strike zone. Over the course of his brief appearance, Townsend faced eight batters, allowing two hits and issuing three walks.
His velocity also raised concern. Normally sitting comfortably in the mid-90s, Townsend’s fastball dipped roughly five miles per hour later in the outing.
That drop appeared to prompt the visit that ultimately ended his afternoon.
Visit from Coaches Ends the Outing
With a full count on the first batter of the second inning, pitching coach Joel Mangrum and athletic trainer Josh Porter came to the mound to check on Townsend. After briefly testing his arm with a dead-ball warmup throw, Townsend was removed from the game.
In total, he threw 35 pitches, including 20 strikes, before exiting.
Freshman Grayson Gibson was called upon from the bullpen and managed to strand the inherited runner, preventing further damage in the inning.
A Key Arm for the Rebels
Townsend entered Saturday’s game as arguably the hottest pitcher on the Ole Miss staff.
Through his first four starts of the season, the sophomore right-hander owned a 0.48 ERA, striking out 32 batters while walking just four across 18.2 innings of work.
His early dominance had already started attracting significant attention from professional scouts. Draft analyst Keith Law of The Athletic recently projected Townsend as a potential top-10 pick in the 2026 MLB Draft, slotting him eighth overall in a mock draft.
Waiting for Answers
For now, the Rebels will have to wait for more information regarding Townsend’s condition.
Ole Miss entered the series with Texas riding strong momentum, including a Friday victory that handed the Longhorns their first loss of the season.
The rubber match of the series is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. CT in Austin.
But regardless of the final score Saturday, the Rebels’ biggest concern moving forward may be the health of their emerging ace.
