Ole Miss Baseball Tops Nevada Wolf Pack 11-3 on Opening Day at Swayze

OXFORD, Miss. — Ole Miss baseball opened its season with an 11- 3 win over the Nevada Wolf Pack at Swayze Field on Friday evening, behind an offensive onslaught in which the Rebels recorded 11 hits, 6 walks, and were hit by 4 pitches throughout the night.

Ole Miss pitching also helped out with some stellar pitching from the staff as they totaled 12 strikeouts allowing just three runs on the night.

Opening Third (Innings 1-3)

Inning One

Nevada’s Jack Harvey opened the game, facing off 60 feet away from Hunter Elliott with an epic nine-pitch at bat, with Harvey getting the win with authority, sending a line drive over the left field wall to open the 2026 season.

Elliott proceeded to battle through the inning, accumulating 25 first-inning pitches, but he did not allow another run.

Into the bottom half of the first, Ole Miss took their first hacks.

Transfer second baseman Dom Decker led off for the Rebels, reintroducing himself to Ole Miss fans with a familiar sight from the College World Series, knocking a blooper into no-man’s land past a diving outfielder, hustling into second for a double.

Following Decker, the Wolf Pack’s starting pitcher, Dominic Desch, issued a walk and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases for another new face in the Rebels lineup, Tristan Bissetta.

Bissetta attacked the first pitch he saw and lined it into the right-center gap for a bases-clearing double.

After loading the bases for the second time, Desch got Austin Fawley to roll one over for a double play while allowing a run to score on the play, before getting a pop out to conclude the first frame.

Inning 2

After a lengthy first inning, Elliott took the mound again, but this time retired the first two hitters in efficient fashion, before a 5 pitch at bat ending in a walk.

However, Elliott’s efficiency returned in a quick at-bat ending in a fly out to center for a sixteen-pitch second inning.

Ole Miss got their second lick, starting with nine-hitter Brayden Randle, lining a single into right field.

Following Randle, Decker grounded into a fielder’s choice, and after back-to-back singles, he found himself crossing the plate for the second time. This time, Will Furniss slapped a base hit up the middle for the RBI.

Quickly, followed by Bissetta recording his fourth RBI of the day with a high chopping single, which plated Utermark for the final run of the second inning, Ole Miss leading 6-2.

Inning Three

After that long first inning, Elliott settled in nicely, accumulating just 28 pitches over the second and third innings, with his first 1-2-3 inning of 2026 coming easily in the third.

It was much of the same when Ole Miss came to the plate, batting just four and being held scoreless for the first time in 2026 to conclude the opening third of the 2026 season.

Middle Third ( Innings 4-6)

Inning Four

Elliott started the fourth quickly, getting a first pitch pop out to center field, but quickly followed that with a four-pitch walk before another pop out and a long at bat leading to a strikeout, which helped him pave his way through the inning.

Ole Miss got right back in the offensive rhythm, loading the bases again, this time with one out.

Daniel Pacella came to the plate with the bases juiced and grounded into a fielder’s choice for his first RBI of the season as Utermark crossed the plate.

Ole Miss quickly found itself back in the field after Fawley struck out to conclude the inning

Inning Five

Elliott returned to the mound for the fifth with a new six-run advantage, and he was lights out. Elliott went on to strike out the side in what would be his final inning of the night.

Elliott finished with a final line of: 5 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 7 K, 1 ER.

All three of the Wolf Pack’s hits came in the first inning.

Ole Miss’s offensive half of the inning was also uneventful as they were retired in order for the first time on the season.

Inning Six

Owen Kelly made his Rebels’ debut as he entered from the bullpen in the sixth and was greeted by three consecutive rockets that went off the infielders’ gloves, leading to an unearned run, before walking the next to load the bases with no one out.

Kelly got some help from Randle, snagging a line drive for the first out of the inning, but unfortunately for Kelly, Randle threw the ball into right field in an attempt to turn two, allowing a second unearned run to cross the plate, cutting the Rebels’ lead to just 7-3.

This ended Kelly’s night after just 0.1 IP, allowing 2 unearned runs.

Hudson Calhoun entered from the bullpen, getting Ole Miss back on track with back-to-back strikeouts to end the sixth, stranding two runners in scoring position.

Ole Miss put itself in a threatening position with first and second with two outs, and Pacella got his first RBI hit as a Rebel, dropping a base hit in front of the right fielder, which plated fellow transfer Bissetta to extend the Ole Miss lead to 8-3. This was quickly followed by a fly ball out to right field, ending the sixth inning.

Final Third (Innings 7-9)

Inning Seven

Nevada’s Rominic Quiban opened the seventh with a lead-off single, and during the midst of a long at-bat, Quiban tried to steal second but was gunned down for the first out of the inning.

Calhoun rallied behind that, recording a strikeout for the second out, before allowing a double to get roped down the line, giving the Wolf Pack a runner in scoring position.

Calhoun finished the inning strong with his second strikeout of the inning and fourth of the night.

Ole Miss put itself in striking distance with Randle dropping down a bunt for a hit and advancing to second on a passed ball. But, following a flyout from Decker, Randle attempted to advance to third but was thrown out to end the inning.

Inning Eight

Calhoun kept on rolling in the eighth inning, seeing just four batters and adding on another strikeout without allowing a run and keeping the Ole Miss advantage at 8-3.

Ole Miss once again found itself with a runner in scoring position with two outs, when Hayden Federico found a hole up the middle, driving in Furniss. Just one pitch later, Brett Moseley sent a no-doubt two-run home run on the first pitch of his collegiate baseball career.

Inning Nine

Calhoun returned to the mound for Ole Miss in the ninth and was instantly helped out as Utermark delivered a strike to first base for the first out of the inning despite a bobble. Calhoun then allowed a single up the middle past the glove of a sliding Randle.

A Look Ahead

Ole Miss returns to the Diamond Saturday at 12 pm as the Rebels look to clinch a series win on opening weekend.
