POSTGAME THOUGHTS: Lane Kiffin discusses Rebels’ heartbreaking 43-35 loss at Georgia

ATHENS, GA. – Ole Miss picked up its first loss of the season this afternoon following a 43-35 loss to Georgia on the road in Athens.
Following the game, Rebels’ head coach Lane Kiffin addressed the media, beginning with his opening statement.
“Lot of credit to Georgia… in the fourth quarter, they made a lot of plays on both sides of the ball… They score every time they have the ball and have 34 first downs. But when you’re in a game like that, you have to keep scoring, and we didn’t do that in the fourth quarter.“

Moving on, the head coach touched on the performance of his quarterback, Trinidad Chambliss, who threw for 263 yards and ran for 42, while totaling three touchdowns.
“I think he handled it really well at the start. The first three quarters, he played amazing… It’s just really disappointing. You’re undefeated, up two scores… how better can you draw it up? We have to coach better in big situations. Those guys made really significant plays when they needed them.“

Looking at the defensive side of the ball, Lane touched on arguably the most important play of the game, a 4th and 1 conversion from the Bulldogs in the second half, which ultimately concluded in a touchdown.
“We got the stop. Now we’re ahead, now we have the momentum, and he goes through our tackles and makes the first down. It felt like a slow-motion moment, like if we stop him here, this game is headed in the right direction.“

As for the opposing crowd, Ole Miss took on 90,000+ in Sanford Stadium today, the largest opposing stadium they’ve visited this season. Despite that and Chambliss’ lack of experience in large crowds, Kiffin believes the team was persistent through a majority of the game.
“I thought we handled the wave of the stadium. I thought we were extremely zoned in on big moments… I told them before, expect to score on this defense. Expect to make big plays…When you score, be ready to do it again, and we did for five series.”

Moving forward, Ole Miss will take on Oklahoma next week at 11 am on the road. Gaylord Family Stadium also holds 80,000+ fans, making it the second-most hostile crowd of the season for the Rebels.
“It does feel like the NFL. Here’s another hard place to play with a top defense… we have a lot of things to fix.”
