ATLANTA — Day one of SEC Media Days on Monday featured Ole Miss’ Lane Kiffin, the second head coach on the day to speak to the media, along with linebacker TJ Dottery, quarterback Austin Simmons, and wide receiver Cayden Lee, who also took questions. It was the first time for all three players to attend the event, and all are seen as leaders on the team.

Lee is coming off a breakout season in 2024, stepping up in some big moments. The Georgia native finished with 874 receiving yards and two touchdowns, and formed a formidable trio alongside Tre Harris and Jordan Watkins, being fed by quarterback Jaxson Dart.

The three have departed for the NFL, leaving Lee with a new group of receivers, several from the transfer portal. Coach Kiffin brought in De’Zhaun Stribling, Trey Wallace, Deuce Alexander, Caleb Odom, and Traylon Ray, who all add experience to the roster. Top 2025 recruits Caleb Cunningham, Winston Watkins, Samari Reed, and Dillon Alfred all could feature this coming season.

Lee knows that this is a talented position group, one he believes could be even better than last season.

Speaking more to the receiver position, from De’Zhaun Stribling, to Trey Wallace, Deuce Alexander, from everybody we brought in, I feel — we kind of revamped. I feel like we’re almost better as a receiver room than we were last year. I feel there’s almost no drop-off at all.

Lee will have a new starting quarterback this fall in Simmons, but they know each other very well, which is a big bonus. The two have been on the roster together since 2023, so they understand how each other plays, creating a good understanding on the field. The receiver is impressed at the transition he has seen from the redshirt sophomore QB.

We’ve just seen Austin just take a tremendous jump from being a ‘quote/unquote’ backup. Just being able to to be that lead starting quarterback in the SEC is awesome. We’ve seen him just learn after Dart. We saw him when he went into the Georgia game, and we really trusted what he was going to do. We knew he was going to be the player that he is today. And we really look for big things out of him this year.

Lee and the Rebels open the season on August 30 when Ole Miss hosts Georgia State at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
