Ole Miss Catcher Campbell Smithwick Enters Transfer Portal

Ole Miss Catcher Campbell Smithwick Enters Transfer Portal

OXFORD, Miss. — The summer transfer portal movement for Ole Miss Baseball is officially underway, as sophomore catcher Campbell Smithwick has entered his name into the portal.

Smithwick saw significant action for the Rebels this past season, appearing in 40 games with 27 starts. Splitting time between catcher and designated hitter, he tallied 31 hits in 110 at-bats, finishing the year with a .282 average. Smithwick added 23 RBIs, five home runs, five doubles, and crossed the plate 20 times while drawing 17 walks.

With the arrival of Kentucky transfer Austin Fawley, who stepped into the starting catcher role on weekends this spring, consistent at-bats for Smithwick likely became harder to come by heading into next season. Conventional wisdom suggests Fawley, a rising junior, is expected to return in 2026 and hold down the starting job once again, which may have factored into Smithwick’s decision.

Smithwick’s departure makes him the sixth Rebel to enter the portal this cycle — and the fifth since the June window opened. Infielder Tyler Acevedo had previously entered the portal following the fall season.

While head coach Mike Bianco and his staff have yet to announce any transfer additions for this offseason, reports suggest movement could be coming soon. Multiple outlets, including On3’s Pete Nakos, have mentioned that Ole Miss is actively pursuing portal options — with catcher among the positions being targeted to bolster the roster.

As it stands, Fawley is currently the lone catcher remaining on the roster heading into summer workouts.

Stay tuned to The Rebel Walk as we continue to track all the roster developments this offseason as the Rebels look to retool for 2025.
