Rebel Talk: Could Ole Miss Baseball Still Host a Regional? Softball’s Postseason Run, and Chris Beard’s Portal Haul

OXFORD, Miss. – Following Kam’s graduation from the University of Mississippi and a brief return home for Zach, the duo is back in the studio for another edition of The Rebel Talk podcast.
To begin, the guys recap men’s basketball coach Chris Beard’s portal haul, including his most recent transfer commit of Louisville forward James Scott. Standing at 6-foot-11 and proving to be a threat on both sides of the floor, Zach analyzes how Scott fits into the front-court rotation of next year’s Rebs.
“You pair James Scott with Malik Dia, Corey Chest, and this freshman Tylis Jordan coming in, and I think it’s going to be an incredible rotation.”

In addition to Scott, Beard also landed highly-touted players like Travis Perry, AJ Storr, Ilias Kamardine, Koren Johnson, and several others.
Moving from the court to the diamond, the most important news of the weekend came from the women’s side of the field on the Ole Miss softball team. The ladies, who were listed as the No. 2 seed in the Arizona regional, upset the Wildcats and advancing to their first super regional since 2019. Kam Wicker shared his thoughts on the impressive performances from the Rebs.

“If you’ve been watching Ole Miss for the past couple of years, you know that they have good things happen when they go down to Tucson… Ole Miss has kind of owned Arizona, and that’s exactly what Ole Miss softball did when they went to Tucson.“

Transitioning into the final segment, Kam and Zach analyze the Ole Miss baseball situation, discussing if the Rebs have done enough to deserve a host spot. Having series wins over three top 15 ranked RPI teams (Auburn/Vanderbilt/Florida) and a singular win over No. 10 ranked Clemson creates an incredible case for Mike Bianco’s squad.
According to Kam, if the Rebs face off against Florida on Wednesday in the SEC tournament, it’s likely that the winner of the game could decide who will earn the final regional host seed.

“Assuming Ole Miss matches up against Florida on Wednesday, that game is going to play a huge factor into who the last SEC host is… the conference tournament is going to play a huge role, and that’s what I had circled before this podcast.“
