No. 1 Ole Miss Falls on the road to Southeastern Louisiana, 5-1
HAMMOND, La. — Top-ranked Ole Miss (13-3) dropped its mid-week contest against Southeastern Louisiana, 5-1, Tuesday in Hammond.
In the top of the second, Ole Miss right fielder T.J. McCants reached first on a two-out walk. Kemp Alderman was able to bring home the first run of the game after a double to left center field that scored McCants.
The Lions (8-9) answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the second on a Tyler Finke solo home run to left field, tying the game with the Rebs at 1-1.
The Lions would add another run in the bottom of the third via a wild pitch from Jack Washburn. That gave Southeastern a 2-1 lead.
The bottom of the seventh would see the Lions scratch across two more runs. With runners on second and third, Southeastern scored on an Ole Miss error.
The second run scored on a fielder’s choice on a ground ball hit to short, making it 4-1, SLU.
In the bottom of the eighth, Southeastern added an insurance run on a solo home run from Preston Faulkner, increasing the Lions’ lead to 5-1.
Jack Washburn records the loss on the mound. He threw five innings, giving up only one earned run and four hits. He struck out five and walked three.
“He battled and he battled hard and he gave us an opportunity to win. It seemed like he lost a little juice there after the first few innings…but he was good enough to win…we just didn’t do enough for him.“
Mike Bianco on Jack Washburn’s outing
The Lions outhit the Rebels 9-3.
“Just a really bad approach against a soft-throwing left-hander, we made no adjustment,” Coach Bianco said of his team’s offensive woes.
“Then when they brought the reliever in who was sharp out of the bullpen with a good fastball, we couldn’t catch up to that. Just a really disappointing day offensively.“
