Live Blog: No. 1 Ole Miss vs. No. 18 Texas

ARLINGTON — The Ole Miss baseball team takes on the University of Texas Monday at Globe Life Field. After defeating then-No. 3 Texas Tech, 5-4, Sunday, the Rebels have now ascended to the No. 1 ranking in Baseball America’s Top 25 following the victory over TCU Saturday and the Red Raiders.

We will have a batter-by-batter update here in our live blog throughout the game. Scroll down for updates and refresh as needed.

The Rebels will be the visiting team in today’s game and will send Derek Diamond to the mound. In 2020, he went at least 5.0 IP in every single outing, and Ole Miss did not lose a game in which he started.

Top of the 9th

Due up for Ole Miss: 9-1-2. LaFleur, Wood, Gonzalez. New pitcher for Texas will be Coy Cobb, who takes the mound in place of Eckhardt. 

Trey LaFleur – First baseman Trey LaFleur with the HOME RUN!!! Ole Miss leads Texas, 6-1. 

Garrett Wood – Wood hitting for Chatagnier who was injured earlier. He draws the walk.

Jacob Gonzalez – The Ole Miss phenom at short is up next, and he triples to right field and scores Wood! Rebels lead 7-1!

Kevin Graham – Graham grounds out to first and gets the RBI as he scores Gonzalez. Rebels lead 8-1.

Tim Elko – Elko grounds out to short. Rebels have two outs, nobody on. Ole Miss leads 8-1.

Hayden Dunhurst – The Ole Miss catcher flies out to center to end the top half of the ninth. Ole Miss leads 8-1.

Due up for Texas: 5-6-7. Ardoin-Porter-Williams. New pitcher for the Rebels will be freshman, 6’4″ Josh Mallitz. 

Ardoin – Mallitz’ first pitch is a 93 mph strike. He gets Ardoin to go down swinging on a nasty slider down and away! That’s Mallitz’ first collegiate batter and first strikeout.

Porter – Six hole hitter Porter flies out to left field. Two down.

Williams – Mallitz gets him to go down swinging! Ball game!

Due up for Ole Miss: Dunhurst, Harris, Sammons. Ekhardt back to the mound for the Horns. 

Hayden Dunhurst – Hayden grounds out to first.

Calvin Harris – Harris to pinch hit for Van Cleve. Harris flies out to left field. Two outs, nobody on for Ole Miss.

Cade Sammons – The Ole Miss RF is HBP. Rebs with runner on and two outs.

Justin Bench – Justin lines out to right field, and we head to the bottom of the 8th with Ole Miss leading Texas, 5-1.

Due up for Texas: 1-2-3. Antico-Kennedy-Melendez. Brandon Johnson back to the mound for Ole Miss after throwing 14 total pitches in the 7th. Rebels lead 5-1. 

Antico – He gets a leadoff double down the right field line.

Kennedy – He pops up to Gonzalez at short.

Zubia – He’s in to pinch hit for three-hole hitter Melendez. He flies out to Justin Bench in center field. Two down for the Horns. Rebels lead 5-1.

Petrinsky – Cleanup batter for the Horns is up next. He’s 1-3 today. Johnson strikes him out!

Due up for the Rebels: 9-1-2. LaFleur-Chatagnier-Gonzalez. Rebels lead 5-1 to start the 7th.

New pitcher for Texas: Right-hander Justin Ekhardt

Trey LaFleur – The Rebels’ first baseman is up next. He strikes out swinging on Ekhardt’s 94 mph fastball.

Peyton Chatagnier – He gets his THIRD double of the day!! This one is to left center. **UGH: Chatagnier appears to have injured himself. Appears to be his hamstring. Garrett Wood on to pinch run for Chatagnier. 

Jacob Gonzalez – The Ole Miss shortstop draws the walk. Rebels have runners on first and second with one out.

Kevin Graham – Kevin reaches on a fielder’s choice. Gonzalez out at second. Wood goes to third. Rebels with runners on the corner and two outs.

Tim Elko – Cleanup batter Elko grounds out to short and the top of the seventh is over. To the stretch we go with Ole Miss leading 5-1.

Due up for Texas: 7-8-9. Williams-Stehly-Faltine. New pitcher for the Rebels will be Brandon Johnson. 

Changes in the field for Ole Miss: Garrett Wood to 2B for Chatagnier. Cade Sammons to RF for Leatherwood. 

Williams – Brandon gets Williams to go down swinging with a 94 mph fastball!

Stehly – Brandon gets Stehly to go down looking. #HYDR

Faltine – The nine-hole grounds out to short! Three up, three down for Johnson!

Due up for Ole Miss: 1-2-3. Chatagnier, Gonzalez, Graham. Kubichek back to the mound for Texas. He’s sitting at 65 pitches to start the inning. 

Peyton Chatagnier – He gets things started with a double down the left field line!

Texas makes a pitching change. Kubichek’s day is done and freshman left-hander Lucas Gordon is the new pitcher for the Longhorns.

Jacob Gonzalez – The Rebels’ freshman shortstop is up next. He draws a full-count walk. Rebels with runners at first and second and no outs.

Kevin Graham – Ole Miss left fielder Kevin Graham is up next. He singles to center and scores Chatagnier! Gonzalez to second. Rebels regain the lead, 2-1! 

Tim Elko – Ole Miss captain Elko is up next. Rebels have runners on first and second with no outs. Elko is hit by pitch and the bases are loaded with Rebels and no outs!

New pitcher for Texas will be right-hander Drew Shifflet. He inherits bases loaded and no outs. Ole Miss leads 2-1. 

Hayden Dunhurst – The Rebels’ catcher with the SAC fly to center that scores Gonzalez! Rebels take a 3-1 lead. Rebels have runners at first and second with one out.

Ben Van Cleve – The Ole Miss DH strikes out swinging. Rebels still have runners at first and second. Two outs.

Hayden Leatherwood – The seven-hole hitter for Ole Miss is up next and draws a four-pitch walk. Bases loaded for Ole Miss.

Justin Bench – CF Bench is up next. He singles to center and scores Elko and Graham! Rebels lead 5-1! Ole Miss has runners on the corners with two outs. 

Trey LaFleur – The freshman first baseman has a full count right now.

Melendez – He grounds out to Gonzalez at short. One down.

Petrinsky – The Longhorn cleanup batter is up next, and he singles to left field. One on, one out for the Horns.

Ardoin – The Texas catcher flies out to Leatherwood in right field. Two outs, runner on first for the Horns.

Porter – The right fielder is the six-hole hitter for the Horns. He comes up to bat with runner on first and two outs. He grounds out to second and we are done with six complete! Diamond sits at 86 pitches.

Trey LaFleur – Trey flies out to right. Three up, three down for the Rebels.

Due up for Texas: 7-8-9. Williams-Stehly-Faltine. Derek Diamond to the mound for the Rebels. He’s sitting at a pitch count of 56. 

Williams – Williams homers to right field and the game is tied at 1-1.

Stehly – The eight-hole hitter grounds out to third on a bunt that a charging Elko fielded. One out. Game is tied 1-1.

Faltine – The nine-hole hitter draws the walk. That’s the first walk Diamond has given up today. He’s at 65 pitches thus far.

Antico – Antico flies out to Leatherwood in right field. Two down, runner on first.

Kennedy – The two-hole hitter for the Longhorns is up next. He flies out to Leatherwood in right field and the inning is over!

Tim Elko – The Ole Miss captain is up next. Kubichek balks and Graham takes second. Graham then gets to third on a wild pitch. Rebs have one RISP. Elko strikes out swinging. Rebels have one RISP and one out.

Hayden Dunhurst – The Rebels’ catcher pops up to the shortstop. Two outs for Ole Miss with runner on third.

Ben Van Cleve – The six-hole hitter goes down swinging to end the top of the fourth. Ole Miss leads Texas, 1-0.

Petrinksy – The Texas cleanup batter Petrinsky goes down swinging! Another K for Diamond, his EIGHTH strikeout of the game.  

Ardoin – Ardoin fouls out to first. Two outs, nobody on for Texas.

Porter – The Longhorns’ six-hole hitter grounds out to short to end the inning! Jacob Gonzalez is really a ninja. What an athletic play to make the snag and throw Porter out. Major League Shortstop.

Peyton Chatagnier – The Ole Miss second baseman strikes out swinging. LaFleur steals third. Rebels with one RISP and one out.

Jacob Gonzalez – strikes out swinging. LaFleur got picked off, caught in a rundown. To the bottom of the 3rd we go with Ole Miss leading 1-0.

Due up for Texas: 1-2-3. Antico-Kennedy-Melendez. Diamond back to the mound for the Rebels with a pitch count of 35. 

Antico – The Longhorn CF fouls out to Tim Elko at third.

Kennedy – Texas’ two-hole hitter up to bat and he goes down looking at Diamond’s 95 mph fastball. That’s Derek’s sixth K today.

Melendez – He goes down swinging as Derek sits them down in order!

Hayden Leatherwood – The Ole Miss right fielder strikes out swinging. Two out for the Rebels.

Justin Bench – The Rebels’ eight-hole hitter grounds out to third to end the top half of the second. Ole Miss leads 1-0.

Bottom of 2nd 

Due up for Texas: 5-6-7. Ardoin-Porter-Williams. Derek Diamond back to the mound for Ole Miss. To start the B2, Diamond is at 19 pitches. 

Ardoin – The Texas catcher is hit by pitch. Texas with runner on and no outs.

Porter – Porter singles to right field. Ardoin gets to second. Texas with two on and no outs. Rebels lead 1-0.

Williams – Texas seven-hole hitter is out at first on the SAC bunt. Porter goes to second and Ardoin to third. Longhorns have two RISP with one out.

Stehly – Diamond gets Stehly to go out swinging! Huge strikeout for Derek! That’s Diamond’s fourth strikeout today.
