Week 7 SEC Picks from Southern Girl Rebel
I was born by the river in a little tent
Oh, and just like the river I’ve been running ever since
It’s been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gon’ come, oh yes it will – Sam Cooke
The nip of an October morning greeted me as I planned for this week’s picks. We wish away summer for fall, and fall for winter, never stopping to take in the changing colors around us. Today I took them in.
Change is coming. It is inevitable.
This week SEC fans and college football fans wished Steve Spurrier a farewell from the world of coaching as he announced his immediate retirement from South Carolina. The end of an era.
When one steps down, someone else must rise up. Who is the next coach to make history and live out his legacy right on the field? Every game can contribute to that moment when you’re remembered for greatness!
My SEC picks for Week 7 are as follows:
13 Ole Miss (5-1, 2-1 SEC) at Memphis (5-0)
11:00 am ABC
This isn’t your grandma’s Memphis team so don’t expect them to play like it. A game I’ve been worried about from the beginning is finally here. Memphis traditionally has had a little rivalry with Ole Miss and last year’s brawl proves it. The Tigers will be coming for blood.
The Rebels have a strong defense and hopefully will play with enthusiasm and put this one away.
My Pick: Ole Miss
Louisiana Tech (4-2) at Mississippi State (4-2, 1-2 SEC)
11:00 am SEC Network
The win/loss column might look similar, but that doesn’t tell the story of a team. State will come out swinging and easily put this one away.
My Pick: Mississippi State
10 Alabama (5-1, 2-1 SEC) at 9 Texas A&M (5-0, 2-0 SEC)
2:30 pm CBS
I smell an upset. A&M may be ranked higher, but after last year’s 59-0 beat down it will be a huge upset if they can take down the Tide. Alabama’s road game is strong this year, and that could create some trouble for the Aggies who haven’t played a single game outside of Texas this season–and won’t until they play Ole Miss.
I’ve got my eye on the Aggies and expect them to finish the job.
My Pick: Texas A&M
Vandy (2-3, 0-2 SEC) at South Carolina (2-4, 0-4 SEC)
3:00 pm SEC Network
Gamecocks everywhere mourned the Head Ball Coach Steve Spurrier after he announced his immediate retirement this week. Shawn Elliott, the co-OC for South Carolina, will take over as interim coach this weekend against Vandy. With a combined 6 SEC losses there’s not much that can be said of this game other than I hope SC gets their first SEC win of the season.
My Pick: South Carolina
8 Florida (6-0, 4-0 SEC) at 6 LSU (5-0, 3-0 SEC)
6:00 pm ESPN
Florida has had a dynamic season…ya know, until this week when it was announced that their starting QB Will Grier was suspended for the season for PED’s. One of two things could happen, and I mean this in the most obvious way. They could go to Death Valley and watch Fournette run all over them all night, or they could play the game of their lives. I don’t expect an in-between. This is a tough one, but LSU is hard to take down at home.
My Pick: LSU
Missouri (4-2, 1-2 SEC) at Georgia (4-2, 2-2 SEC)
6:30 pm SEC Network
Nick Chubb is out with an injury at Georgia–as if the Bulldogs needed any more bad news this season. Missouri doesn’t do offense well, so I’m gonna give Georgia a chance this week and hope their luck turns around.
My Pick: Georgia
