Ole Miss Lands Penn State Transfer Rachael Okokoh

Ole Miss Lands Penn State Transfer Rachael Okokoh

OXFORD, Miss. — Head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin and Ole Miss Rebels women’s basketball continue to build momentum in the transfer portal, adding another intriguing piece with the commitment of Rachael Okokoh from Penn State.

Okokoh, a 6-foot-4 forward from Montreal, Quebec, brings size, length, and long-term upside to a frontcourt that is clearly being retooled with intention. In her freshman season at Penn State, she saw limited action, averaging 1.1 points and 1.6 rebounds in a reserve role while shooting an efficient 45 percent from the field. She did not attempt a three-pointer, operating primarily around the basket.

On paper, the numbers may not jump out—but this is the type of addition that often tells a bigger story beneath the surface.

A Developmental Piece with High Upside

Okokoh arrives in Oxford as a player whose ceiling may far exceed her freshman production. Like many young post players transitioning from international competition to the college game, her first season was more about adjustment than dominance.

Before arriving at Penn State, she built a strong reputation in Canada as a physical, versatile forward with the ability to impact the game on both ends. That foundation, paired with her frame and athleticism, gives Ole Miss a player who can be developed within the system rather than relied upon immediately.

And under McPhee-McCuin, development has been a consistent strength.

Building Size and Identity in the Paint

What stands out most about this addition is how it fits into the bigger picture.

Ole Miss is clearly prioritizing length and defensive versatility in the frontcourt. Pairing Okokoh with Boise State transfer Emily Howard gives the Rebels two players at 6-foot-4 and 6-foot-5, respectively—size that can alter shots, control the glass, and make life difficult for opposing offenses in the SEC.

That kind of lineup has the potential to reshape how Ole Miss defends in the halfcourt.

Okokoh’s mobility for her size also adds another layer. She’s not just a traditional post; she moves well, runs the floor, and has shown flashes of ball skills that could expand her role over time.

A Calculated Addition

This may be one of the more strategic moves of the offseason. With her size, background, and room to develop, Ole Miss may have added a player who becomes far more impactful a year or two down the line than she appears today.

And if that happens, this move won’t look like a quiet addition—it’ll look like a brilliant one.
