Ole Miss Football Spring Practice Report: Tuesday, April 7th
OXFORD, Miss — The media was allowed to watch their second practice of the spring on Tuesday, April 7, with viewing time of approximately 12 minutes.
As we did last Tuesday, we watched punts for the on-field drills today, but we were able to glean more from our vantage point on the sidelines this week.
The linebacker room is legit
According to sources, Clemson transfer Luke Ferrelli will serve as the ‘green dot’ linebacker, meaning he is the one wearing the helmet communication with head coach Pete Golding, calling the plays on the defense. This is unsurprising, considering Golding’s comments last week where he discussed his recruitment of Ferrelli and the role of who would wear the green dot. One interesting note we hear is that Baylor transfer Keaton Thomas is still making a push for that important green dot. Regardless of who ultimately is in-game communicating with Coach Golding, the consensus is the linebacker room has been upgraded and either of those two could wear it.
Also of note, according to our sources, Tah’j Butler has looked strong thus far in practices this spring and should have a role this season. From all accounts, this is a significantly better group of linebackers than last year. True freshman Ant Davis also looks good, but raw; he very well could play a role this season.
Trinidad Chambliss is bigger and better
As expected, the returning quarterback still looks good, maybe even a little bigger, as he did put on some weight this offseason. You forget just how fast he is, but in person, you’re reminded quickly of the quarterback’s speed and agility. His throws are as crisp as ever.

Injury Report
Keep in mind, we are only able to view 12 minutes of practice, so it’s simply not possible to accurately assess who might be injured or in the rehabilitation/recovery process. What we can tell you is if a player is wearing a different-colored jersey that might indicate his status.
A yellow jersey signifies an injury where there is to be no contact during the drills. We have seen the following wearing the yellow top:Â #5 RB Kewan Lacy; #28 CB Dante Core; #52 OL Cooper Johnson; #55 DE Cam Clark; #62 OL Brycen Sanders; and #82 TE Michael Smith.
A green jersey signifies an injury but means some contact is allowed in some drills. As follows are players who were in green jerseys–signifying an injury but contact in some drills. Players wearing the green jersey include: #4 TE/WR Caleb Odom; #6 S Joenel Aguero; #22 LB Raymond Collins; #26 RB JT Lindsey; #39 S Gerald Lacy, Jr.; and #49 LB Tah’j Butler.
Some of these injuries range from minor surgical procedures to other varying degrees, but we have been advised that none are to be worried about at this time.
Offensive tackles
We spent some time today asking around about the offensive tackle position. As the Rebels lost both their starting right and left tackles to eligibility from last season, many folks are wondering who might step in to fill those big shoes. The names that kept popping up from our sources when we asked about the tackle position are all transfers: Miami transfer Tommy Kinsler IV, Florida transfer Enoch Wangoy, and LSU transfer Carius Curne. Expected to be in the mix as well is a healthy returning Terez Davis.
Wide receiver roomÂ
There are a lot of big names in the wide receiver room for Ole Miss this year. From players like returners Deuce Alexander and Caleb Cunningham, to the newest additions via the transfer portal, this room looks to be as stacked and talented as Ole Miss has been known for.
Thus far, the receivers standing out, in addition to Alexander and Cunningham, who look great, are Syracuse transfers Johntay Cook and Darrell Gill, Jr., along with Auburn transfer Horatio Fields.
What is the defense looking like?
First and foremost, the defensive line is massive. Will Echoles could have a Walter Nolen-type of year, according to our sources. In addition to his talent, Kam Franklin has become an even more valuable leader along the defensive line.

Transfers Jonathan Maldonado, Jordan Renaud, and Blake Purchase have looked very strong along the defensive line as well.
As mentioned above, the linebacking corps looks like it could be one of the best units on the defense this season with the additions of Ferrelli and Thomas. While we haven’t really had much of an opportunity to see the DBs in action, we can say that unit is reportedly stronger than last season, according to sources, as well. If and when we have an opportunity to view the secondary in action, we’ll of course report it.
Wrap up
The media saw quite a bit of punting today in terms of on-field work, so there just hasn’t been much to physically get your eyes on. But we can say this team looks in complete synergy — and so does Coach Golding’s staff. It is clear they enjoy coaching with one another and that sort of attitude is contagious to the rest of the team.
We will have more pressers on Friday with an assistant coach and players; however, we are not set to view another practice until next Tuesday.
Stay with The Rebel Walk as our team is at practice and pressers and will bring you all the available info. Hotty Toddy!
