No. 25 Ole Miss Baseball Cruises to Midweek Run-Rule Win Over Alcorn State

OXFORD, Miss. — The No. 25 Ole Miss baseball team defeated Alcorn State, 11-1, on Tuesday at Swayze Field. The Rebels notched a three-run seventh inning that ended with a run-rule walk off.

The Rebels (23-11) jumped on the Braves (7-26) early, walking the bases loaded for Dom Decker, who recorded the team’s first hit of the day with a bases-clearing double. Judd Utermark soon roped an RBI double of his own down the left field line all the way to the wall, giving Ole Miss a 4-0 lead in the second inning.

Ole Miss starting pitcher Grayson Gibson turned in a short outing, despite four strikes and just thirty pitches, twenty of which were strikes, staying on the mound for two innings. Owen Kelly took over in the third.

The Rebels added another in the third as Austin Fawley rolled over a ball toward third, but chopped it enough for Owen Paino to score from home. Fawley reached first on a throwing error.

Paino tallied two more for Ole Miss as he slapped a bases-loaded single through the side of the infield, pushing the Ole Miss lead up to 8-0 in the fourth.

The Braves put themselves on the board when Clayvonjae Wright smoked a two-out solo home run into the left field stands, cutting the deficit to seven in the fifth.

Ole Miss got that run back in the eighth as Utermark recorded an RBI and reached base via a fielder’s choice, giving Ole Miss an 8-1 lead.

Over the course of the game, Ole Miss saw a handful of arms head out to the mound. Noah Allen took over for Kelly for 2.0 innings, Leo Odom followed that with 1.2 innings, and Wil Libbert took over for the final out of the sixth.

Ole Miss headed into the bottom of the seventh, needing three runs for a run-rule win. The Rebels proceeded to load the bases with one out, and freshman outfielder Cannon Goldin drew a walk for his seventh RBI of the season.

Ole Miss proceeded to draw two more walks after for what amounted to a walkoff-walk from Paino to secure the 11-1 run-rule win.

A Look Ahead

Ole Miss returns to the diamond for a highly anticipated weekend series against the No.24 LSU Tigers. The series will begin on Friday at 6:30 P.M. CT.
