The Next Move: Why Ole Miss Must Invest to Elevate Coach Yo’s Program

OXFORD, Miss. — If you’ve watched Ole Miss Rebels women’s basketball the last few years, you already know this thing is real. Not flashy. Not fake. Just real.

Head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin built a team that plays the way people around the world of college basketball respect. Her teams defend. They scrap. They don’t back down from anybody in the Southeastern Conference. You can turn on a game in January or March and it looks the same—physical, locked in, and together. That’s not an accident. That’s culture and buy in.

But here’s the part folks don’t always say out loud: Ole Miss is close, but not all the way there yet, and it’s not because of coaching.

You Can See the Gap

Watch the top of the league. South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball. LSU Tigers women’s basketball.

They’ve got players who can take a game over when things get tight. Not just one—multiple. They’ve got size, depth, and experience coming in every single year. They don’t hope to be good. They expect it.

Ole Miss has been right there with them for stretches. Made it ugly. Made it hard. That’s why nobody enjoys playing the Rebels, but when it comes down to having that one more piece… you can see it.

College basketball isn’t patient anymore. You don’t wait three years for a class to grow up. You go get what you need. That’s the portal. And let’s be honest—getting the kind of player that changes your season usually takes more than just a good pitch. It takes resources.

Ole Miss has dipped into the portal and found some amazing players. That’s been part of the rise. But there’s another level to it—the kind where you’re landing players everybody else wanted too. That’s where the game changes.

Coach Yo Has Earned This

There’s nothing left to “prove” about Yolett McPhee-McCuin.

She’s already made Ole Miss relevant again, won in this league, built a locker room players buy into, and given the Ole Miss women’s basketball program an identity.

You don’t wait around with a coach like that. You don’t make her keep squeezing every ounce out of a roster just to keep pace. You give her what she needs and see how high it can go.

Nobody’s saying Ole Miss needs to outspend everybody, but if you can add a guard who can go get you a bucket late, a post who controls the paint, and a veteran who’s been deep in March, that changes everything about this team. That’s the difference between hoping for a Sweet 16 and walking in expecting more.

Don’t Let This Stall Out

Momentum doesn’t hang around in college sports. You either build on it or you lose it.

Right now, Ole Miss women’s basketball has people paying attention. The Pavilion gets loud. The team has an edge to it. There’s belief. The worst thing you can do at that moment is stay still.

If Ole Miss backs Coach Yo and her staff with the right resources, you’re not just getting a better roster. You’re giving a proven coach the chance to break through. If you’ve watched this team at all the last few years, you know that’s a bet worth making. This writer will take it any day. Hotty Toddy! Let’s go!
