Preview: Ole Miss Looks to Clinch Series vs. No. 2 Texas in Game 2 After Dramatic Opener
AUSTIN, Texas — Ole Miss heads into Saturday afternoon’s Game 2 against Texas Longhorns baseball with momentum firmly on its side after one of the most dramatic wins of the young college baseball season.
The Rebels stunned No. 2 Texas in Friday night’s SEC opener, rallying from a late four-run deficit before eventually winning 9–8 in 11 innings, handing the Longhorns their first loss of the year.
Now the focus shifts quickly to Game 2 of the three-game series at UFCU Disch‑Falk Field, where Ole Miss will attempt to secure a massive road series win to begin SEC play.
Friday’s opener featured multiple momentum swings and a finish few in the Austin crowd saw coming.
With Texas leading late, the Rebels staged an improbable rally highlighted by a two-out grand slam from right fielder Tristan Bissetta, tying the game and completely changing the tone of the night before Ole Miss ultimately prevailed in extra innings.

The victory not only improved Ole Miss to 16–3 overall and 1–0 in SEC play, but it also immediately flipped the pressure onto Texas heading into the rest of the weekend. In SEC baseball, stealing Game 1 on the road can completely reshape a series — and the Rebels now have a chance to capitalize.
Pitching Matchup to Watch
Game 2 will feature one of the best pitching matchups of the weekend. Ole Miss will hand the ball to right-hander Cade Townsend, who has been nearly unhittable early in the season. Townsend enters the game with a microscopic 0.48 ERA and a reputation for generating strikeouts and weak contact.
Texas is scheduled to counter with left-hander Luke Harrison, a pitcher who has also delivered solid outings early in the year.
The matchup sets up as a classic SEC showdown: elite pitching on both sides with little margin for error.
Key for Ole Miss: Controlling the Game Early
After the emotional rollercoaster of Friday’s opener, one of the biggest challenges for the Rebels will be resetting mentally.
Ole Miss relied on its bullpen extensively in Game 1, using multiple arms to navigate the extra-inning victory. The performance from the pitching staff — including strong relief work late — was critical to preserving the win. If Townsend can deliver a deep start in Game 2, it would allow Ole Miss to stabilize its bullpen while keeping Texas’ dangerous lineup from building early momentum.
For the Longhorns, Game 2 becomes a chance to quickly regroup after a heartbreaking loss.
Texas had been undefeated entering the series before the Rebels erased a late lead and handed them their first defeat of the season. Expect the Longhorns to come out aggressive offensively, particularly early in the game, as they attempt to even the series before Sunday’s finale.
What’s at Stake
A win Saturday would give Ole Miss a series victory over the No. 2 team in the country to open SEC play — a result that would immediately strengthen the Rebels’ national résumé.
For Texas, the mission is simple: bounce back and avoid dropping the first SEC series of the year at home.
First pitch for Game 2 today is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT in Austin, where another tightly contested battle between two elite pitching staffs is expected.
And after the chaos of Friday night, no one should expect this series to get any less dramatic.
