Ole Miss’ Cade Townsend Earns Spot on National Pitcher of the Year Watch List

OXFORD, Miss. — Cade Townsend’s dominant start to the season hasn’t gone unnoticed on the national stage.

The Ole Miss right-hander was named Wednesday to the College Baseball Foundation’s National Pitcher of the Year Watch List, an honor that highlights some of the top arms in Division I baseball.

Townsend is one of 141 pitchers across the country included on the list and one of 17 representatives from the SEC — a conference widely regarded as the deepest in college baseball when it comes to pitching talent.

Through his first four outings of the season, Townsend has been nearly untouchable.

The California native enters the weekend carrying a microscopic 0.48 ERA, which ranks among the best marks in the conference. In fact, he has surrendered just a single earned run all year — a sacrifice fly that came in the second inning of his season debut against Nevada.

Since that moment on February 14, Townsend has settled into a groove, piling up 17 consecutive scoreless innings on the mound.

His ability to miss bats has been just as impressive.

Townsend has recorded at least seven strikeouts in each of his four starts this season and recently set a new career high with nine punchouts during a combined shutout victory over Ohio State. His strikeout rate currently sits among the SEC’s leaders, with a 15.43 strikeouts-per-nine-innings average, while his 0.75 WHIP ranks among the conference’s top marks as well.

The early-season performance has quickly established Townsend as a key piece of Ole Miss’ pitching staff as the Rebels move deeper into their schedule.

His next opportunity to build on that momentum will come this weekend when Ole Miss travels to Austin for its SEC-opening series against No. 2 Texas. Townsend is expected to take the mound Saturday as the Rebels look to make a statement against one of the nation’s top-ranked teams.
