Ole Miss Baseball Heads to Austin for Top-10 Pitching Showdown with No. 2 Texas
AUSTIN, Texas — The Southeastern Conference baseball schedule begins with a bang for Ole Miss.
The Rebels travel to Austin this weekend for a three-game series against No. 2 Texas, marking the first time Ole Miss has played at UFCU Disch-Falk Field since 1912. It’s a historic setting for what could quickly become one of the most compelling matchups of opening weekend in SEC play.
Both teams enter the series with impressive resumes built largely on elite pitching.
Texas arrives with a perfect 16–0 record, while Ole Miss comes in at 15–3, and both clubs have leaned heavily on dominant arms through the first month of the season.
Pitching Could Define the Series
If the early numbers hold true, this weekend might come down to whichever offense can scratch out just enough runs.
Texas currently owns one of the top pitching staffs in the country, posting a 2.42 team ERA that ranks among the best in Division I. Ole Miss hasn’t been far behind, entering the weekend with a 2.68 ERA, putting the Rebels firmly among the nation’s top staffs as well.
For Texas head coach Jim Schlossnagle, the formula for success remains simple — even as the competition ramps up with SEC play.
“You still have to throw strikes, dominate the strike zone, make routine plays,” Schlossnagle said. “You want to play good situational winning baseball, and that doesn’t change relative to the opponent.”
That philosophy will certainly be tested against an Ole Miss team that has been difficult to score on all season.
The Rebel staff has posted a 1.13 WHIP, consistently limiting traffic on the bases while forcing opposing hitters to earn everything.
Ace vs. Ace Matchups Await
The weekend rotation sets up several intriguing pitching battles.
Game 1: LHP Hunter Elliott (2-0, 3.66 ERA) vs. RHP Ruger Riojas (4-0, 1.23 ERA)
Game 2: RHP Cade Townsend (2-0, 0.48 ERA) vs. LHP Luke Harrison (1-0, 3.06 ERA)
Game 3: LHP Wil Libbert (2-1, 4.58 ERA) vs. LHP Dylan Volantis (2-0, 1.54 ERA)
Ole Miss will open the series Friday with left-hander Hunter Elliott, who enters the weekend with a 2–0 record and a 3.66 ERA. Elliott has shown flashes of dominance early in the season, though command has occasionally been an issue with 15 walks through his first four starts.
Still, Texas knows the challenge Elliott presents.
Schlossnagle called the Ole Miss starter “one of the best lefties in the country.”
Texas counters with Ruger Riojas, who has been one of the most dominant pitchers in college baseball so far. The right-hander enters the weekend 4–0 with a 1.23 ERA, striking out 42 hitters while issuing just three walks in 22 innings.
Saturday could feature the Rebels’ best arm.
Cade Townsend, who has been nothing short of spectacular early this season, is expected to take the mound for Ole Miss. The right-hander owns a 0.48 ERA, allowing just one earned run while striking out 32 hitters in his first four starts. Opponents are batting just .152 against him. Texas will counter with Luke Harrison, a lefty who is 1-0 on the season with a 3.06 ERA.
Sunday’s finale is expected to feature Wil Libbert for Ole Miss against Texas left-hander Dylan Volantis.
Rebels Bring Power to Austin
While pitching may dominate the storyline, Ole Miss brings plenty of offensive firepower of its own.
The Rebels are one of the few teams nationally that rank among the leaders in both team ERA and home runs, giving Mike Bianco’s lineup the ability to change games quickly.
Judd Utermark has been the biggest power threat so far, launching 10 home runs already this season. Tristan Bissetta has added eight homers, helping the Rebels build one of the most dangerous long-ball lineups in the country.
Texas has been strong at the plate as well, hitting .340 as a team, a mark that ranks among the nation’s top offenses.
In other words, while pitching may headline the matchup, both teams are more than capable of producing runs.
Familiar Opponents, Different Results
Interestingly, both teams participated in the Bruce Bolt College Classic in Houston earlier this season, though they never crossed paths.
Texas swept its three games at the event, while Ole Miss went 1–2, defeating Ohio State but falling to Baylor and Coastal Carolina.
Now the Rebels will get their shot at the Longhorns directly.
What to Watch
Opening SEC weekend often reveals a lot about a team. For Ole Miss, the keys will likely come down to:
- Limiting Texas’ explosive offense
- Continuing the Rebels’ dominant pitching trend
- Taking advantage of power opportunities at the plate
With two elite pitching staffs taking the field, runs could be at a premium all weekend.
As Schlossnagle put it, a series like this often comes down to the smallest details.
“There’s just not many weaknesses,” he said. “It’ll come down to who has a bad day, and can we capitalize on it?”
