Ole Miss Baseball Falls in Saturday Matchup Against No. 2 Texas Longhorns, Rubber Game Set for Sunday

AUSTIN — The Ole Miss Rebels dropped their first game in SEC play to the No. 2 Texas Longhorns, 11-2, at Disch-Falk Field in Austin, Texas on Saturday, setting up a crucial rubber match in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.

Ole Miss now sits at 16-4 on the season (1-1 SEC), while Texas bounces back from their first loss and advances to 17-1 on the season (1-1 SEC).

The Recap

Texas struck first with a two-RBI single from Anthony Pack Jr. Although the second runner was thrown out, an interference call on the Ole Miss third baseman allowed him to score, giving Texas a 2-0 lead after one.

Rebels starting pitcher Cade Townsend, who has been on a tear so far this year, exited the game due to injury in the second, forcing Ole Miss to call on true freshman Grayson Gibson in a longer relief situation.

However, Gibson escaped unscathed in his first inning and was rewarded by the offense, which scraped two runs across when Hyaden Federico scrambled home on a wild pitch before Will Furniss ripped a sacrifice fly into center field, allowing Dom Decker to score and tie the game, 2-2.

However, just one inning later began the Longhorns’ offensive explosion that spanned multiple innings.

The fourth saw Ethan Mendoza start the scoring with an RBI single, followed by Aiden Robbins’ RBI single of his own that gave Texas a 4-2 lead.

The fifth saw the Longhorns held scoreless, but the sixth and seventh reopened their scoring when Mendoza recorded another RBI, this time off a sacrifice fly, Robbins also recorded a sac fly and Adrian Rodriguez singled through the final run of the sixth inning. Texas proceeded to plate four in the seventh to give the Longhorns an 11-2 lead.

The scoring began with Maddox Monsour recording another RBI single for the Longhorns, before Mendoza and Rodriquez recorded a pair of RBI base hits to combine for the other three runs, putting the Longhorns on the brink of a run-rule victory.

Ole Miss’ bats continued to struggle and they entered the ninth with a nine run deficit they just couldn’t trim.

A Look Ahead

A rubber match awaits tomorrow as Ole Miss and Texas will play one more game at 1 P.M. CT Saturday with the winner claiming their first SEC series victory of 2026.
