Oxford, Miss. –Â Nearly 48 hours following the signing of Syracuse transfer Darrell Gill Jr., Pete Golding and the Ole Miss staff have added another Orange wide receiver to their portal class, Johntay Cook, a Texas native with multiple years of SEC experience under his belt.
Prior to his collegiate success, Cook, as a high schooler, was ranked as a top 50 player in the country and appeared in the 2023 Under Armour All-American game. Simultaneously, Cook won the state championship with DeSoto High School and was deemed an All-State player in the process. Due to his early success, he joined the Texas Longhorns to begin his college career.
The 6-foot-0, 200-pound receiver played in Austin for two seasons under Steve Sarkisian, totaling 16 receptions, over 250 receiving yards, and two touchdowns. During this time, Cook also gained experience in the College Football Playoffs.
Soon after the conclusion of the 2024 season, he entered the portal and transferred to Syracuse, where he became a big-time player in the ACC. Cook hauled in 45 receptions for 549 yards on the year with two touchdowns to show for it.
Moving into 2026, Cook will become a reliable target for Ole Miss, whether it’s Trinidad Chambliss, Deuce Knight, AJ Maddox, or Walker Howard at the quarterback position. This is another incredible pickup for John David Baker and the Rebel wide receiving unit.
