REBELS RISE: Despite coaching changes, Ole Miss moves up one spot in College Football Playoff Rankings
OXFORD, Miss. — The final regular-season week of College Football Playoff rankings were released this evening, and Ole Miss comes in at No. 6, moving up one spot after a 38-19 win over Mississippi State in the annual Egg Bowl.
Following the departure of head coach Lane Kiffin for LSU, the Rebels announced the hire of former defensive coordinator Pete Golding as permanent head coach. There had been much talk from media and fans about whether the playoff committee would drop the Rebels lower in the rankings since they will not have Kiffin on the sidelines. Instead, the Rebels have moved up.
On Tuesday, Ole Miss announced that offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. would return from LSU, where he has signed a term sheet, to be with the Rebels during the playoffs. Also joining Weis Jr will be running backs coach Kevin Smith, offensive line coach John Garrison and quarterbacks coach Joe Judge.
In this week’s rankings, the SEC has seven teams: Georgia (3), Ole Miss (6), A&M (7), Oklahoma (8), Alabama (9), Texas (13), Vanderbilt (14).
