OXFORD, Miss. — There is a massive prize at stake for Ole Miss and Georgia as they meet in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on New Year’s night: a place in the College Football Playoff semi-final. For Rebels safety Wydett Williams Jr., he knows the team needs to stay in the moment. However, these moments don’t come around often.

“Really just to stay in the moment with my teammates, keep enjoying moments like these, because they don’t come very often. So cool,” Williams Jr. said Tuesday when asked his thoughts on playing in the Sugar Bowl.

Williams Jr. well aware of QB Gunner Stockton’s abilities

When Georgia came from nine points down in the fourth quarter the last time the two teams met, quarterback Gunner Stockton was a big part of that. Williams Jr. knows he is a talented signal caller.

Yes, he’s a game manager. He makes smart choices with the football. He’s able to move around in the pocket well and keep his eyes downfield. So he’s a good guy. He’s a good football player.

While Stockton isn’t as fast as Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss, he’s quite effective, rushing for 442 yards and 8 touchdowns this season.

“He’s also good with running the football as well,” Williams said of Stockton.

You don’t always have to be the fastest. He’s a smart guy back there. That’s a good reason why he’s back there. He’s smart with the football in his hands. So he makes the right decisions and being able to extend those plays
with his legs.

Ole Miss Defense Keeps Finding Ways to Win

The Rebels’ defense has improved throughout the season, limiting some of the most exciting offenses in the country — including Georgia for three quarters. Since then, Ole Miss has been excellent, finding ways to win in challenging situations.

“Really, to find ways to win, to be able to just keep going, putting the last play in the past,” Williams Jr. said of the defense’s mindset. “So finding ways to win, how much we grew from the first game, and the beginning of the season until now.”

Can they put it all together again and get a big win against Georgia in Athens on New Year’s Day? Tune in January 1, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. CT.
