Micheal Spurlock Returns to Oxford as Pete Golding Continues to Shape Ole Miss Staff
OXFORD, Miss. — Pete Golding’s staff is beginning to take its final shape, and one of his latest additions brings both Ole Miss roots and NFL experience back to Oxford. Former Rebel and longtime professional return specialist Micheal Spurlock has officially joined Golding’s coaching staff and is expected to replace senior analyst and inside receivers coach Sawyer Jordan, who departed to join Lane Kiffin at LSU.
Ole Miss has hired former Ole Miss quarterback Micheal Spurlock to join the Rebels’ offensive staff for 2026.
Spurlock worked with Ole Miss as a senior analyst for the 2020-2021 season. His most recent job was running backs coach at Southern Miss from 2024-2025.

Spurlock is one of several assistant hires Golding is expected to finalize as he completes his first Ole Miss staff, continuing a clear theme of experience, talent and institutional knowledge.
The Spurlock Player File
A native of Indianola, Mississippi, Spurlock’s return is a full-circle moment. He played for the Rebels during the 2004 and 2005 seasons, appearing in 19 of a possible 22 games while contributing at multiple positions. Originally a quarterback, Spurlock threw for 1,709 yards and accounted for nine total touchdowns during his Ole Miss career, showcasing the versatility that would later define his professional path.
That versatility carried him to an eight-year NFL career, where Spurlock carved out a reputation as one of the league’s most reliable special teams contributors. He made history with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, becoming the first player in franchise history to return a kickoff for a touchdown. Over the course of his career, he added four additional return touchdowns, cementing his value as a game-changing presence in the return game.
The Spurlock Coaching File
Spurlock transitioned into coaching in 2014 and brings a well-traveled résumé back with him. He previously worked under Coach Golding in 2017 at UTSA, serving as a special teams quality control coach while Golding was the program’s defensive coordinator under head coach Frank Wilson.
Wilson, now serving as the interim head coach at LSU, has also been rumored as a potential addition to Golding’s Ole Miss staff.
Spurlock has held a variety of roles across the region. He served as wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator at Southeastern Louisiana, spent two seasons as an analyst at Ole Miss, including the Rebels’ 2021 Sugar Bowl campaign, and most recently coached running backs at Southern Miss during the 2024–25 seasons. This past year, he worked as an analyst at Auburn, adding another SEC stop to his coaching journey.
Spurlock’s hire comes amid a broader reshaping of the offensive staff. L’Damian Washington is set to replace George McDonald as Ole Miss’ wide receivers coach. Washington arrives from Kentucky and previously spent two seasons as passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach at USF under Alex Golesh, who recently took over as Auburn’s head coach following Hugh Freeze’s departure.
While the offensive side sees new faces, Golding has prioritized continuity elsewhere. The Rebels retained Jake Schoonover (special teams) and John Garrison (offensive line), along with the entire defensive staff.
Golding also made his biggest offensive move last week with the hiring of John David Baker from East Carolina as offensive coordinator. Charlie Weis Jr. remains in Oxford to call plays during Ole Miss’ College Football Playoff run before departing for LSU.
With only a handful of on-field roles left to fill, Golding’s staff is nearly complete.
As the Golding era continues to take shape, the return of Micheal Spurlock reflects a broader vision: blend experience with familiarity, protect what’s working, and surround the program with people who understand what Ole Miss means — both on the field and beyond it.
