OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss football team conducted another series of interviews today, including a slot with Co-Defensive Coordinator Bryan Brown.Â
Despite joining Pete Golding’s coaching staff in 2024, the former Rebel player spent time with Golding coaching at Delta State back in the early 2000s. Following his days at Delta State, Brown earned himself defensive coordinator roles at both Louisville and Cincinnati, where he found major success in the early 2020s.
Fast forward to this season at Ole Miss, the promotion of Pete Golding has returned Brown to the brighter spotlight and given him additional responsibilities.
“I think with Pete being elevated to head coach, my role has changed a little, so I’m taking over the role of scripting for practice, meeting with the defensive staff, and getting all of those things ironed out so Pete can drive that bus when it’s game day.”
– Brown on his role in the CFP
As for gameday, it was revealed that Pete Golding will move from the press box down to the field level, leaving Brown a decision to make. The veteran coach decided that due to trying to maintain “familiarity,” he will also remain on the sidelines for the remainder of this season.
On top of Golding moving down from the press box, Brown elaborated on the style of coaching fans can expect from the new Rebel head coach in the playoffs and in the years to come.
“He does a great job of thinking outside the box. He understands that what you see on film you may not get… you want to try and think a step ahead to try and see what they’re going to do next… the biggest thing is he always has answers for answers.”
– Brown on Golding’s coaching style
Off the field, Brown discussed that arguably the primary reason he’s coaching at Ole Miss, aside from playing football here, was having the opportunity to collaborate with Golding on a yearly basis. Bryan spoke on the character and impact Golding made in his career.
“He is a great guy and an unbelievable human being. I’ve known Pete for years, one of the reasons I took this job was because of him. To be able to come back home and do that with my university… this is a dream come true.”
– Brown on Golding as a person
Looking further to the first challenge that Brown and Golding will face together is a dynamic Tulane offense, which was limited to 10 points during their previous game in Oxford. Since then, the Green Wave concluded their season as AAC champions with an 11-2 record.
“With Tulane, those guys have done a great job moving forward. They beat the ACC champion, and they’re a much better team overall. Jake (Retzlaff) has done a great job distributing the ball.”
– Brown on preparing for Tulane
Backing off of Brown’s comments, Retzlaff and the Green Wave have four receivers who’ve collected 400 yards or more on the season, with two extremely productive running backs.
This will be the first of potentially many challenges that the Rebels will face over the course of the College Football Playoffs. Ole Miss vs. Tulane will kick off at 2:30 pm and be broadcast on ESPN. As always, Hotty Toddy and go Rebs.
