Updates: The Lane Kiffin saga continues as Rebels’ head coach prepares to take LSU job; Pete Golding named Interim Head Coach

OXFORD, Miss. — In an attempt to keep information flowing as quickly as possible, we’ll post the latest Ole Miss football updates here with times noted. We’ve included some of the relevant social media posts for sources. Full articles will be forthcoming as the need arises.

One item of particular note: After the player meeting today, players leaving the facility indicated defensive coordinator Pete Golding is the head coach of Ole Miss.

The Rebel Walk’s Karis Chambliss was among the first to report that Golding is actually the permanent head coach and not just interim.

Here has been the chronology of events for today:

Sunday, 8:00 a.m. – As we learned last night was to be the case, Ole Miss players on the Football Leadership Council held a meeting this morning with Athletics Director Keith Carter. Some of the players on the council include: Trinidad Chambliss, De’Zhaun Stribling, Austin Simmons, Brycen Sanders, Will Echoles, TJ Dottery and Diego Pounds, to name a few.

Sunday, 9:00 a.m. – ESPN’s Marty Smith reported Lane Kiffin would hold a players meeting at 9:00 a.m. Sunday. That meeting was later pushed back to 1:00 p.m., and it is widely expected that Kiffin will not be in attendance.

Sunday, 9:20 a.m. – 247Sports’ Neal McCready reported that the leadership council was “on its way to Lane Kiffin’s office in the Manning Center. Players are unhappy with Kiffin, and that’s putting it mildly.”

Sunday, 10:24 am – Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports the postponement of the team meeting is due to Ole Miss trying to retain staff for the playoffs.

Reports indicate Lane Kiffin was unhappy he was not being allowed by Ole Miss to coach the Rebels in the playoffs, in spite of  the obvious conflict that he would simultaneously be the head coach of LSU. These same reports suggest Kiffin threatened Ole Miss that if the administration didn’t allow him to coach the playoffs, he would take the offensive staff with him now, leaving the Rebels without those staffers for playoffs. Further, Kiffin reportedly told his offensive staffers if they didn’t leave with him today for LSU, they would not be welcome on his staff in Baton Rouge.

Sunday, 11:07 a.m. – ESPN’s Chris Low reports, as prior reported by Rebel Walk and others, that Pete Golding is expected to stay at Ole Miss and coach the Rebels in the playoffs. Golding and Joe Judge are among names that have been mentioned as both interim and permanent head coach.

Sunday, 12:58 p.m. – Pete Nakos reports Ole Miss is requiring players to turn in their cell phones during the scheduled 1:00 p.m. meeting.

Sunday, 1:00 p.m. – The Rebel Walk’s Karis Chambliss and Billy Kuhl are on hand at the Manning Center and are keeping us updated on what’s taking place outside the facility as the player meeting is set to begin soon.

Sunday, 1:25 p.m. – Players exit the building and announce that “It’s the Pete Golding Era!”
